Holiday apartment in Monteu Roero – Circular trails, castle and wine

Monteu Roero combines the landscape of the Rocche with signposted circular trails, a well-preserved medieval fortress and wine experiences at local farms.

Holiday apartment in Monteu Roero: Nature along four circular trails

Monteu Roero has four signposted themed circular trails. The Sentiero della Castagna Granda, the Sentiero della Fossa dei Cinghiali and the Sentiero dei Fossili start in the main village; the Sentiero dell’Acqua begins in the hamlet of San Grato. The different themes help you organise your outings according to your interests without reducing the landscape to a single experience.

The Sentiero della Castagna Granda reaches a monumental chestnut tree estimated to be more than 400 years old, with a circumference of over 10 metres. The trail passes through typical Roero forests with Scots pines and reaches a ridge path with scenic views. In clear weather, the view stretches from the medieval castle of Monteu Roero to the historic centres of other hilltop villages situated on the Roero Rocche.

On the Sentiero della Fossa dei Cinghiali, you experience a damp valley floor in the Rocche, where pools of water form and fossil shells can be seen in the sandy valley floor. The Sentiero dei Fossili takes its name from shells and shell fragments, fossilised leaves or tree trunks, as well as rarer fish fossils that emerge from the sandy walls of the Rocche. The S1 – Grande Sentiero del Roero also passes through Monteu Roero, running through chestnut groves and along the ridges of the Rocche.

Castle, church and regional culture

The castle of Monteu Roero is a well-preserved medieval fortress and, together with the views from the ridge, defines the historic character of the village. The present parish church, Chiesa di San Nicolao, was built between 1858 and 1861 on the site of an older church. A walk through Monteu Roero can therefore combine two different historical testimonies: a medieval fortress and a 19th-century church building.

The region’s culinary culture is also part of the local character. Farms producing Roero DOCG wines offer cellar tours and wine tastings. When planning your trip, you can therefore combine hiking days with an insight into wine production, without having to view nature and cultural experiences separately.

Destinations around Monteu Roero

In the vicinity of Monteu Roero are Castello di Pralormo, a castle, Palazzo Traversa, a museum, Palazzo Mathis, a palace, and Palazzo Comunale, another palace. Area Verde Giovanni Falcone Paolo Borsellino is a garden in the surrounding area. The wider region also includes Parco Cascina Vigna, a park, and the natural arch Arco Charles Emmanuel I - Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy. These different types of destinations broaden the scope between history, nature and the regional landscape.

When choosing your accommodation, you can consider the desired mix of your holiday days: The four themed circular trails each focus on different aspects, while the castle, church, wineries and nearby destinations add further highlights. A holiday apartment in Monteu Roero is therefore particularly well suited to a trip where you want to combine nature observations, cultural impressions and regional cuisine at your own pace.
