Agriculture and Chapel in Cavaliggi

In the hamlet of Cavaliggi, Azienda Agricola L’Ostal directly operates agritourism as well as educational activities in the fields and laboratory. Agricultural activity and educational work are both linked to the same Azienda, with the fields and laboratory forming two specific areas of its activities. The Cappella di Santa Maria della Valle is also located in the hamlet of Cavaliggi. The chapel therefore represents another local point of interest within Cavaliggi, alongside the activities of the Azienda.

Old Native Apple Varieties

The apple culture of Azienda Agricola L’Ostal plays a special role. It has recovered around 50 old native apple varieties. At an event held on October 20 in the hamlet of Cavaliggi, a walk through the orchard was part of the program. The focus was on traditional apple varieties and organic farming. There was also a blind tasting of different apples, as well as tastings of juices and several varieties of organic cider. The event thus led from the orchard to the apples and on to juices and organic cider.

The Anello to Cavaliggi

The Anello Montemale – Piatta – Castelmagno circular route descends from B.ta Piatta Inferiore to Cavaliggi. After Cavaliggi, it follows the provincial road toward Pradleves before the final ascent to the Santuario di Castelmagno begins. The Santuario di Castelmagno is situated at 1,760 m above sea level. The sequence of downhill section, road section and final ascent is relevant for planning the day because the three parts come one after another. Anyone planning breaks or dividing the route into their own sections can treat the final ascent as a separate part of the circuit. The provincial road toward Pradleves forms the middle section of the route described.

Irrigation Canals and Priory

The Sentiero dei Frati runs through the area between Valgrana and Monterosso Grana, along irrigation canals on both sides of the Torrente Grana. These canals were built on the initiative of Benedictine monks at the ancient Santa Maria della Valle Priory in the hamlet of Cavaliggi in Valgrana. For a day hike focused on landscape and culture, this section has a different character from the Anello with its final ascent to the Santuario. Before Cavaliggi, the Sentiero dei Frati runs along the southern slope of Bric la Plà.

From the Southern Slope to the Ridge

Another notable section is Curnis Auta, part of the La Piatta/Barma Rossa – Valle Grana circular hike. It lies on a ridge between the Valle Grana near Monterosso Grana and the lower Valle Maira near Tetti di Dronero. There are also trail sections supported and bordered by dry-stone walls. The circular hike turns into the Cumbal della Piatta about 600 metres after the turnoff to Cavaliggi. When dividing up the circuit, the approximately 600-metre section between the turnoff and Cumbal della Piatta can be considered separately. This makes it possible to record the transition from the turnoff to Cavaliggi to Cumbal della Piatta as a separate short section of the circular hike.
