History and Sacred Art in Villafalletto

The origins of the castle ruins of Villafalletto date back approximately to the year 1000. Villafalletto Castle served both as a defensive stronghold and residence for the lords and, in times of need, as a refuge for people and supplies. Another highlight is the Chiesa di Madonna degli Alteni. It was built in the 18th century in Baroque and Neoclassical forms; its façade and bell tower are Baroque.

The Madonna degli Alteni sanctuary contains a late-15th-century fresco depicting Saint Bernard. It also houses a panel painting from the 15th to 16th century attributed to the Maestro di Marchiotto Falletti. The Chiesa dell'Assunzione di Maria Vergine houses a papier-mâché processional group dating from 1764. It depicts Christ at the pillar with two tormentors and was created by Giovanni Battista Bernero. The permanent exhibition “Cose della Memoria” is located on the ground floor of Palazzo Maggiori.

The brotherhoods also shape the cultural character of the town. The Confraternita del Gonfalone preserves a processional representation of the scourged Christ. The Confraternita della Misericordia is based in a church built in 1675 over a smaller predecessor building. Villafalletto also has two plaques commemorating Sacco and Vanzetti: one is located on a house where one of them was born, and the other is on the square opposite the town hall.

Processions and Seasonal Traditions

The traditional procession of the scourged Christ takes place every year on the Monday before Easter. On Holy Tuesday, the Confraternita della Misericordia stages the reenactment of the Mortorio Pasquale. This Mortorio Pasquale is a Baroque-style processional rite rooted in the popular traditions of the Middle Ages. The procession follows a route of approximately 2 kilometres through the main streets of Villafalletto and returns to the Chiesa della Nera. During the Christmas holidays, Villafalletto's nativity scene is also displayed, featuring around 60 life-size statues and decorations made by volunteers.

Paths along the Maira for Walks and Bike Rides

Parco del Maira extends from the castle ruins along the Maira river area through green paths used for walking and mountain biking. The park offers a loop trail of more than 3 kilometres for walkers, cyclists, and runners. This makes it possible to combine cultural visits and active hours during the same trip, without limiting your holiday to just one type of experience.

For cycle tourists, the Villafalletto–Vottignasco stage of the Sentiero sul Maira is 6 kilometres long, designated for mountain bikes, e-bikes, and gravel bikes, and accessible year-round. From the centre of Villafalletto, it leads near the Cappella di San Rocco onto an unpaved road along the stream; various resident bird species can be observed there. Different route lengths and means of transport help you adapt your daily plans to your preferred pace.

Location of the Sanctuary and Park Access

The Madonna degli Alteni sanctuary is located outside the built-up area on the road to Saluzzo, the SP 25. The equipped area near the castle ruins is designated as an access point to Parco del Maira.
