Castagnito between the Plain and the Hills

The area of Castagnito includes a plain and a system of hills. The plain in the southeast consists of Middle and Recent alluvial deposits transported by the Tanaro River. Vineyards, orchards and hazelnut groves characterize parts of the area. The transition between the alluvial plain and the agricultural areas on the hills gives the municipal territory a clear spatial contrast.

Views and Trails around Castagnito

Castelverde is an equipped scenic viewpoint on the hilltop above Castagnito Town Hall. A short path leads there from the town hall; the indicated route is 0.4 km long and includes 30 m of ascent.

The section of the Sentiero dell’Acino that passes through Castagnito is considered its most panoramic part. It offers views of the hills of Astigiano and as far as the Langhe. The Sentiero dell’Acino also offers a detour to the San Quirico viewpoint. The area from Costa through Serra to Soarme is also suitable for relaxed outings.

Art, Churches and History

Castagnito combines vineyards, orchards and hazelnut groves with churches and the former castle. The Parrocchiale di San Giovanni Battista houses a painting attributed to Moncalvo, although it was probably painted by his daughter, Orsola Maddalena Caccia. The Chiesa di Santo Spirito was built to a design by Giovanni Carelli, who was from Castagnito. It contains an altarpiece depicting the Descent of the Holy Spirit; the artist is unknown, and the work is dated 1658.

The former castle of Castagnito, “Castel Verde”, is documented in a land sale from 1074. The present-day Cappella di San Bernardo was built in 1736 to a design by the lawyer Giovanni Carelli, who was from Castagnito. The Madonna delle Campagne was built in its present form in 1884 and has an iron bell tower. A permanent photo exhibition on the “Percorso dell’Acqua” is located in the monumental hall beneath Castagnito Town Hall.

Produce and Easter Tradition

Castagnito offers visitors typical, high-quality fruit and vegetable produce. Castagnito is also associated with excellent wines, including the full range of the best wines of Roero. The combination of fruit and vegetable cultivation with the wines of Roero gives the region’s produce two specific focal points. On the eve of Easter, Castagnito observes the “Suonare le conchiglie” ritual every year; for one day, shells replace the sound of the church bells.
