Discover Bastia Mondovì: Art, History and Gastronomy

In Bastia Mondovì, church art, local history, a chapel route and regional specialities come together at specific sites. These include San Fiorenzo, the preserved ruins of the castle destroyed in 1303, the Parrocchiale di San Martino and the Sacrario di San Bernardo. The “Le Cappelle del Tanaro” route and the “Morsi e Sorsi” tour add several religious sites and a culinary highlight to these locations.

San Fiorenzo: Art and Explanations

San Fiorenzo preserves a valuable cycle of paintings that can be visited with detailed explanations. The explanations are available in Italian, French, English, German and LIS, Italian Sign Language. The murals depict scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and the childhood of Jesus. Further depictions cover the lives of Saint Fiorenzo and Saint Anthony the Great. The pictorial programme also includes episodes from Christ’s Passion, death and Resurrection.

Guided visits to San Fiorenzo take place on Sundays from April to the end of October, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The period therefore extends from spring into autumn; each guided visit is limited to Sunday afternoon and three hours. Since 1999, the Associazione Culturale San Fiorenzo has also organised the “NATURARTE” event annually.

Castle and Parrocchiale di San Martino

The castle of Bastia Mondovì was destroyed in 1303; however, some ruins remain. The ruins complement the two churches with a preserved part of the former castle complex. The Parrocchiale di San Martino originated from a 12th-century chapel. Inside, there is a 15th-century fresco depicting Saint Martin on horseback. The fresco therefore dates from a later period than the chapel from which the Parrocchiale developed.

The Le Cappelle del Tanaro Chapel Route

The “Le Cappelle del Tanaro” route includes several chapels in this area with old decorations that remain clearly recognisable, including the Church of San Fiorenzo in Bastia Mondovì. San Fiorenzo is therefore both a stop on the route and a church in Bastia Mondovì. The religious sites are thus spread across several chapels rather than being limited to a single interior.

Remembrance at the Sacrario di San Bernardo

The Sacrario di San Bernardo is dedicated to those who fell serving in the 1° Gruppo Divisioni Alpine. The names of around 1,000 people are carved into the plaques along the access path. They lost their lives in the struggle for liberation between September 1943 and April 1945.

NATURARTE and Morsi e Sorsi

At the 2026 Mostra dell’Uva e del Vino, the six-stop enogastronomic tour “Morsi e Sorsi – Un percorso di sapori per le vie di Bastia” was planned as a central feature. The tour leads through the streets of Bastia and combines the event’s wine and culinary character with a route through the town.
