Olmo Gentile: Castle Towers, Historic Center and Hiking Trails

The castle complex of Olmo Gentile consists of two clearly separate parts: a tower and a residential building. The square sandstone tower probably dates from the 12th century. The residential section of the castle was commissioned by Bishop Gozzani in 1681. This clear division makes the complex an illustrative record of different building phases and gives the townscape a distinctive historic feature.

The old town center also preserves several distinctive traces of the past. There you will find a fortified old farmhouse whose construction year, 1587, is carved into a portal. The Church of the Disciplinati was built by Bishop Gozzani during his stay in Olmo Gentile. The private Chapel of San Sebastiano was built in the last century on the ruins of a very old pieve; some of its forms were retained in the process. Also in the old town center, you can see an old hayloft with a roof made of stone slabs that is still in fairly good condition.

Rocky Landscape and Distinctive Landforms

The landscape of Olmo Gentile includes a ridge that resembles a promontory. The area also has tuff-rich soil containing abundant shells and marine fossils. A branch of the cycling route in the municipality of Olmo Gentile leads to a rocky embankment with a rock face; there, the Tatorba stream is crossed via a small footbridge. In addition to the historic buildings, you will therefore encounter tangible landscape features that shape the character of the surrounding area.

Circular Routes for Different Activities

The Giro delle 5 Torri circular route can be walked in any season. It follows partly paved roads, gravel roads, farm tracks, and paths through forests and meadows. At the same time, the circular route connects the medieval towers of Monastero Bormida, San Giorgio Scarampi, Olmo Gentile, Roccaverano, and Vengore. The route is therefore suitable if you would like to combine historic destinations with a longer journey through different types of landscape.

The Giro delle 5 Torri is signposted with official red-and-white CAI trail markings, signs, and arrows pointing to the main towns and attractions, as well as 5T directional markers on the signposts. Another connection is the Roccaverano–Olmo Gentile–Serole–Bric Puschera route. It can be travelled by car, on horseback, by bicycle or mountain bike, or on foot; some sections are accessible only on foot.

A Regional Touch on the Menu

The area’s culinary identity includes the Trattoria di Geminio, also known as Ristorante della Posta, which is considered one of the cornerstones of the cuisine of the Langa Astigiana. The name thus represents another thematic connection, placing Olmo Gentile within the region’s food culture beyond its buildings and trails.
