Holiday apartment in Cessole: culture, festivals and medieval historic center

Cessole is particularly striking in its historic center. The center preserves a distinctly medieval character; in the evening, carefully designed lighting highlights the stonework, gateways and dry-stone walls. At the highest point of the historic center, the foundations of an ancient tower and traces of the walls of the former Cessole castle have been preserved.

Holiday apartment in Cessole: culture and local history

The parish church of Cessole was completed in 1784 and designed by Giacomo Carretto, a student of Juvarra. The parish church dates from a later construction phase than the Santuario della Madonna della Neve in Cessole. It comprises two churches arranged one above the other. The lower church is the oratory of the Confraternity of the Disciplinati and is also known as the Chiesa dei Battuti; several panels from a 16th-century Stations of the Cross are preserved there. This building therefore combines a clearly dated completion with a distinctive internal layout and preserved sacred panels.

The Santuario della Madonna della Neve is a 16th-century church with a colonnaded portico in front and a slender bell tower. The Church of Sant'Alessandro is a Baroque building in the lower part of Cessole, beyond the Bormida. Anyone wishing to visit its interior can ask at the nearby Albergo del Ponte. This gives your daily itinerary different focal points of sacred architecture in the historic center and beyond the river.

Casaforte, Sternìa and the location on the Bormida

A casaforte at the highest point of Cessole's historic center initially served military purposes and was later used as a residence. From the casaforte, a section of a Sternìa leads uphill toward the hill. The combination of fortified architecture and this ascending section draws attention both to the architectural and spatial aspects of the area's history.

The Cucca area lies on the right bank of the Bormida di Millesimo, opposite Cessole's historic center. This position across the river helps you view Cessole not only through its buildings, but also through its spatial relationship with the riverside area.

Festivals and special dates

The annual calendar also brings notable events to Cessole. The Sagra delle frittelle takes place on the third Sunday in May and includes a rural procession. On Christmas Eve, from 10 p.m., the old streets of Cessole's historic center, lit only by torches, host a living nativity scene from the Langa. The annual feast of the Madonna della Neve on August 5 combines a holy mass with socializing and the traditional games of Pantalera and bocce. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, these three dates offer different cultural and community occasions.
