Holiday apartment in Terruggia: culture, wine and hiking trail 736
Terruggia combines local culture, wine tradition and paths through the landscape. Historic spaces, distinctive buildings, ties to wine and a hiking trail shape the character of the town and give your holiday days different focal points.
Church, theatre and a long-established local history
In the centre of Terruggia, the Chiesa di San Martino stands opposite the town hall. It is dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours and the Nativity of Mary. Construction began in 1574; the church was consecrated on 26 June 1601. Its position opposite the town hall gives the church a clear connection to the town.
The Teatro Le Muse has a vaulted auditorium with floral decorations, panels depicting the Muses and Greek deities, as well as a restored old film projector. A theatre season takes place there every year from October to April. The period from October to April thus establishes a clear seasonal focus for cultural events in Terruggia.
Parco di Villa Poggio is a public park with centuries-old trees. Villa Poggio was donated to the municipality of Terruggia in 1938. The centuries-old trees complement the buildings with a natural element in the townscape.
The Infernot del Municipio has a circular floor plan and is carved from sandy sandstone with visible sedimentation bands. It is considered an example of spontaneous art from Terruggia’s farming tradition. Towards the end of the 19th century, it was created to store wine bottles; it is also one of the few publicly owned infernot sites. The visible sedimentation bands add another material detail to the circular floor plan.
Vineyards, hiking trail and Torre Veglio
Hiking trail 736, “I Campi e i Prati Intorno a Terruggia”, begins near Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II by the town hall. It leads across fields and meadows and through vineyards before reaching Torre Veglio. For planning a day of hiking, the proximity to Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and the town hall defines the specific starting area. Torre Veglio is a round, 19th-century tower on the hill at the boundary between Terruggia and Rosignano. Torre Veglio is privately owned, not accessible to visitors and visible only from the outside.
For 2026, “Vivere in Campagna” is referred to as the 31st edition. The programme includes wine tastings and wine masterclasses.
Bus connections and regional routes
A bus stop with a shelter is located on Via Roma near the Chiesa di San Grato. A local bus line connects Casale Monferreto with Terruggia, Rosignano, Frassinello, Ottiglio, Grazzano and Moncalvo. The connection therefore extends beyond Terruggia to several other towns.
Local culture, wine and landscape
Chiesa di San Martino and Teatro Le Muse represent local culture, the Infernot del Municipio represents farming tradition and wine, and hiking trail 736 leads across fields, meadows and vineyards to Torre Veglio.
