Pozzolo Formigaro combines historic routes and local traditions with the landscape of the plain. Castello di Pozzolo Formigaro was built around the 11th century as a medieval defensive castle on the plain. It stands on an alluvial terrace overlooking the plain.

Roman traces in the landscape

The historic centre of Pozzolo Formigaro lies on a Roman Via Quintana, a decumanus of the Roman centuriation of the area established from the 2nd century BC onwards. The Via Fulvia was one of the Roman consular roads that crossed the area of Pozzolo Formigaro. To the east of Pozzolo Formigaro runs the Via Postumia, which is also known as the “Stradone dell’Imperatore”. To the west runs the Via Aemilia Scauri, also known as the “Via Levata” and “strà du diau” (“Devil’s Road”).

Routes, archaeology and art

The Stradone dell’Imperatore runs as a path through the landscape between Bettole di Pozzolo and Rivalta Scrivia, following the ancient Roman route. Roman urns, oil lamps and coins have been found along the historic roads connected with Pozzolo Formigaro, indicating settlements and necropolises from the imperial period. The circular route “Sulle vie di Roma” combines archaeology, landscape and remembrance through Roman remains. An art trail leads through the historic centre and connects the Castello, the oratories and other examples of popular religious devotion. The circular route thus focuses on archaeology in the landscape, while the art trail places the historic centre and its buildings at the centre.

Historic centre and religious buildings

The historic centre includes the Oratorio della Beata Vergine Assunta, also known as Battuti Bianchi; it bears witness to the former importance of confraternities. The original church of San Martino was founded around the year 1000. The first documented mention of the parish of San Nicolò in Pozzolo Formigaro dates from 1523. The cultural heritage of Pozzolo Formigaro reflects the meeting of Ligurian and Piedmontese influences. Palazzo Morando has a frescoed façade in pastel colours typical of the Ligurian “caruggi”. Religious buildings and a secular façade detail thus complement the traces of the Roman routes with further tangible points of interest in the townscape.

Traditions and taste

Every year on Palm Sunday, the centre of Pozzolo Formigaro becomes a lively setting filled with colours, aromas and traditions. The Festa di San Sebastiano culminates in an evening dinner with agnolotti in the castle rooms. Agnolotto di Pozzolo is prepared by hand and served throughout the year at local sagre and tastings. The speciality thus combines festive cuisine in the castle with the town’s recurring culinary occasions.
