The Rio Secco e Piana Palomba Nature Reserve is open and accessible to visitors year-round. Ninety-eight bird species have been recorded there, including the red kite, peregrine falcon and raven. The Sentiero LIPU – Rio Secco offers an easy hike through nature in the LIPU reserve, accessible to everyone. From the trail, panoramic views extend from the Matese to the Mainarde.

For a longer route option, the Via di San Francesco – Con le ali ai piedi trail in the Province of Isernia passes through Sant’Elena Sannita, Macchiagodena, Santa Maria del Molise, Carpinone, Sessano del Molise, Chiauci, Pescolanciano, Carovilli, Vastogirardi and San Pietro Avellana. Castle, antiquity and archaeology

The Castello di Macchiagodena preserves the bases of the polygonal surrounding walls and two sturdy towers made of exposed hewn stone blocks. The castle existed by the Angevin period at the latest; a small triangular fort was later expanded and converted into a residential palace. The castle grounds also contain a large stone lion dating from the 13th century.

An Italic temple is located near the Valle Fredda spring in the Macchiagodena area. Near Capoccia lies an extensive settlement where roof tiles and glossy black pottery of the Campana A type have been identified. These sites complement the medieval castle with older traces of settlement and route history.

Reading culture in the town

Since 2016, Macchiagodena has been the national headquarters of the Associazione Nazionale Borghi della Lettura. Also in 2016, the municipality established “La Terrazza della Lettura” as an open-air library on the main square below the medieval Castello. Visitors could read there as well as take books and return them.

The establishment of a Casa del Libro was planned in Macchiagodena’s medieval tower. It was intended to house books donated by tourists as well as by book and culture enthusiasts. Reading, history and the town’s architectural core are thus connected in a remarkable way.

Polenta and local tradition

Traditional Macchiagodena polenta comes in a red version with sausage and peppers, as well as a white version with salt cod and onions. In the preparation of Polenta e Baccalà, the term “fattaruoli” refers to the pieces of polenta portioned out by the spoon.
