Roccaravindola: Church Art, Festivals and Nature

Roccaravindola combines medieval traces, religious art and traditional customs. The town is home to evidence of Roman history alongside festivals, games and regional cuisine. The various sites are spread across Roccaravindola, Roccaravindola Alta and Venafro.

Church Art and History in Roccaravindola

The Benedictine Church of San Michele Arcangelo dates back at least to the 9th or 10th century. Its frescoes include a depiction of a bagpipe player, considered one of the oldest depictions of its kind in central Italy. The church also contains the 14th-century mural “Resurrezione di Lazzaro”.

The parish church dedicated to the patron saint of Roccaravindola was built on a rocky outcrop in 1760 and overlooks the entire Volturno Valley. The aqueduct of Augustus is clearly visible along the hill of Roccaravindola. During the imperial period, Roccaravindola developed into a Roman settlement associated with control of this aqueduct. The medieval historic centre of Roccaravindola Alta features several arches.

The Museo Nazionale del Molise in Castello Pandone in Venafro displays a medieval fresco depicting Saints Bartholomew and Michael from the Church of San Michele di Roccaravindola.

Festivals, Seasons and Local Cuisine

“N'Coppa alla Rocca” has been organised in Roccaravindola Alta since 1998 and takes place in August. During the event, old houses are transformed into exhibitions for antiques, photography and local handicrafts.

During the Easter season, “La Tuzza”, an egg game characteristic of Roccaravindola, is played. The “Falò di San Giuseppe” takes place every year on 19 March in Roccaravindola. It follows a centuries-old tradition: volunteers collect bundles of wood and brushwood and light them on the evening of 19 March to create a large fire.

The “Sagra della Polenta” takes place every year at the beginning of September; classic polenta with sausage and tomato is served there, and polenta with vegetables and beans is also prepared. The first edition of the “Sagra della Patata” took place on 7 September 2019 in Roccaravindola Alta. The 39th edition of the “Carnevale Ravindolese” took place on 23 February 2020 in Roccaravindola.

For planning the timing of a trip to Roccaravindola, the fire festival on 19 March, “N'Coppa alla Rocca” in August and the polenta festival at the beginning of September mark different dates. The Easter season adds “La Tuzza” to this rhythm.

Nature and Local History

In the surroundings of Roccaravindola, an ecological walk leads through one of the most scenic areas of the “Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo e Molise”. The railway line between Roccaravindola and Isernia was completed around 1890. The focus of the walk is on the landscape; the route refers to the transport history between Roccaravindola and Isernia.
