Hiking Trails to Lago di Pilato

The trail from Foce to Lago di Pilato is considered challenging. The ascent involves approximately 1,000 metres of elevation gain and is listed as taking an average of three hours. The historic trails between Foce and Lago di Pilato are not managed directly by the national park and are marked only with the CAI’s horizontal colour markings. The national park recommends being accompanied by a park guide or a qualified CAI association. Late spring and summer are considered the preferred times, as the area is covered in snow for much of the year.

Crossing via Monte Vettore

The CAI crossing from Foce to Forca di Presta leads over Monte Vettore and past Rifugio Tito Zilioli. It is classified as difficulty level EE, covers 14.7 kilometres, includes 1,502 metres of elevation gain and 946 metres of descent, and has a stated duration of 6 hours and 30 minutes. The CAI recommends the route when it is free of snow, from late spring through autumn, via Banditello and Monte Vettore. It begins a few metres below the small lake in front of Foce and leads through a beech forest towards Monte Banditello.

Landscape and Conservation at Lago di Pilato

The valley of Lago di Pilato in the area around Foce is a U-shaped valley of glacial origin and is considered the most sensitive ecosystem in Monti Sibillini National Park. The lake is fed exclusively by snowmelt and precipitation and is the habitat of the endemic Chirocefalo del Marchesoni. In the area around Foce, visitors may not approach the shores of Lago di Pilato because the Chirocefalo lays its eggs in the gravel along the shallower shore.

Just beyond Foce di Montemonaco lies Piana della Gardosa, an extensive meadow valley surrounded by the mountains Monte Vettore and Monte Sibilla. Wild camping on Piano della Gardosa is permitted only in specifically designated areas.

The Chiesa di San Bartolomeo in Foce may stand on the ruins of an old hermitage or abbey that was already in existence in the 13th century. The Fiera di Foce takes place on 15 August in the hamlet of Foce.
