Churches of Art and Tradition

The Church of Sant’Egidio Abate was first mentioned as a parish church in 1270. Its façade preserves the portal of the original Romanesque structure, with concentric arches resting on small columns. Sant’Egidio Abate is also home to the polyptych “Il Pentittico della Madonna e Santi” from the mid-15th century, a work by the Maestro di Staffolo.

A Franciscan monastery of the Friars Minor already existed in Staffolo before 1230. The Church of Santa Maria della Castellaretta was built in 1571 by residents of Staffolo who had returned unharmed from the Battle of Lepanto against the Turks. Along the town walls stands a tower known as the Torrione dell’Albornoz, attributed to Cardinal Albornoz.

The Church of San Francesco al Musone is associated with a distinctive religious tradition. It was built in 1796 by a family from Staffolo as a votive offering; miraculous healings were associated with it and attributed to the water of a spring incorporated into the building. According to local tradition, Saint Francis and Brother Egidio drank from the spring near San Francesco al Musone in 1210 while preaching on their way to Ancona. The interior walls of San Francesco al Musone display numerous testimonies to a popular devotion that continues to this day. The Church of San Francesco is also home to a valuable Callido organ dating from 1769.

Verdicchio, Processions and the Piazza

The Festa del Verdicchio celebrates the Verdicchio produced in Staffolo and includes music, dancing, conferences and exhibitions on gastronomy. The Festa di Sant’Egidio Abate combines religious celebrations and a procession with traditional games and gastronomic competitions in Piazza Leopardi, which is also known as Piazza dell’Arciprete.

The ruins of Castreccioni Castle and Pianetti Palace are located in the surroundings of Staffolo. The Museo “a. Colocci” and Colocci Palace are also nearby.

The natural arch Clementine Arch, the summit of Monte Martino, the summit of Monte Mitola and the mountain Monte Acuto are also located in the surroundings of Staffolo.

Circular Trail Along the Town Walls

A lime-tree avenue approximately 700 metres long runs around the town walls of Staffolo. The approximately 700 metres can be covered as a short walk through the town. From the so-called Banghitti, the circular trail along the town walls offers views across the three valleys of the Esino, Misa and Musone as far as the Adriatic and the narrow outline of the Croatian islands.
