Churches and Monastic Complexes in the Historic Centre
Santa Maria della Piazza is the main church in the historic centre of Ostra Vetere in terms of both size and visual impact. The church was formerly the seat of a Benedictine abbey and was founded in 1444. It was subsequently completely rebuilt twice. The former Santa Lucia Monastery is now home to the Polo Museale Terra di Montenovo; from the late Middle Ages until the 19th century, the monastery housed the Poor Clares.
Further stops include the Chiostro di San Francesco, with its 15th-century complex, and Porta IV agosto, one of three entrances to Ostra Vetere’s medieval centre. The Chiesa di S. Lucia is richly decorated with valuable Baroque ornamentation. The Chiesa del SS. Crocifisso was built in the 16th century and incorporated an existing wayside shrine.
In the Chiesa di S. Croce, behind the main altar, there is a Crucifixion with Saints by Claudio Ridolfi (“il Veronese”). A pair of polychrome terracotta tiles depicting the Nativity and the Lamentation is considered a rare and precious example of late-15th-century maiolica.
Earth Architecture and Historical Identity
The Casa di Terra in Ostra Vetere was the first public initiative in the Marche region to preserve an earthen building. At the same time, it is one of the few surviving original rural homes in the Marche region built entirely of earth and straw, and it is very well preserved. Palazzo Marulli, located in the historic centre within the ancient medieval walls, houses a museum, an antiquarium, a library and an archive. As a result, the palazzo is an important centre of historical, artistic and popular identity and culture for the local community and visitors.

The Le Muracce archaeological site lies near Ostra Vetere on the left bank of the Misa and comprises the remains of the Roman city of Ostra.
Montenovo in Festa 2026
Montenovo in Festa 2026 was announced for 29 and 30 August 2026 at Piazza della Libertà in Ostra Vetere. The event was announced as the “Festival delle Cantine del Borgo” and was intended to provide an opportunity to rediscover the aromas and flavours of typical Marche cuisine. The two announced August dates give the festival a clearly limited timeframe for planning your trip.
