Scaldasole combines an impressive history with an agricultural landscape and a range of ideas for active or culture-focused days out. Scaldasole is home to a fortified castle, the Boschetto di Scaldasole Regional Nature Reserve, the Antonio Strada archaeological collection and a cycling route through the fields.

Castello di Scaldasole and traces of history

Castello di Scaldasole is a fortified complex with seven medieval towers. It includes a 15th-century ricetto, considered unique in Lomellina. The original core of the castle was built at the end of the 10th century, while Ardengo Folperti had the ricetto constructed in 1404 as an arms depot and refuge for the population. The castle therefore brings together the core dating from the end of the 10th century, the seven towers and the 15th-century ricetto in a single fortified complex.

Archaeological collection and visiting arrangements

The Antonio Strada archaeological collection comprises artefacts dating from the Neolithic to the Lombard period. This time span reaches far beyond the medieval structures of the castle. The collection does not stop chronologically with the towers and the ricetto, but extends the scope back to the Lombard period. Visits to Castello di Scaldasole are available for groups and school classes by mandatory reservation and with a minimum group size of 15 people.

Nature reserve and cascina

The Boschetto di Scaldasole Regional Nature Reserve was established in 1984. The cascina adjoining Castello di Scaldasole was built between the 18th century and the beginning of the 20th century according to the traditional model of a closed farmstead. The agricultural enterprise at the cascina produces rice, maize and poplar trees and keeps cattle.

Cycling route and fishing as active holiday activities

The cycling route Il giro della Lomellina leads from the junction near Cascina Bonaparte across the fields to Castello di Scaldasole. The route connects the fields with architectural history, as the landscape shapes the course and the castle forms the destination.

Fishing is available at Laghetto “Emilio” after registering with the relevant amateur sports association.

Palaces and castle in the surrounding region

The wider region around Scaldasole is home to several historic buildings. Dattili Palace, Residenza d'Epoca and Palazzo Gounela are palaces, while Castello Visconteo is a castle. The palaces and the castle therefore represent different types of architecture in the wider area around Scaldasole.

Gardens and park in the surrounding area

The wider region around Scaldasole also contains three gardens and a park. Giardini Sandro Pertini, Giardini Piazza San Bovo and Giardini Piazza Castello are gardens, while Parco Locomotiva is a park. These open spaces therefore complement the palaces and the castle with further specific destinations in the surrounding region.
