Bereguardo combines active days by the water with striking reminders of its history. A section of the Anello di Bereguardo runs close to the Ticino, while churches, Visconti heritage and traditional festivals provide further highlights. By the water, the Anello di Bereguardo and the Naviglio take centre stage; the church, Castello, pontoon bridge and festivals add further specific points of interest.
Nature and culture in Bereguardo
The Anello di Bereguardo circular trail starts and ends at the cemetery car park in Bereguardo. One section runs close to the Ticino and offers repeated panoramic views as well as opportunities to observe wildlife. The Naviglio di Bereguardo is also a destination for nature excursions in the Parco del Ticino: small stone bridges and masonry remains of old locks shape the experience. A long, asphalted and easy-to-cycle path runs along the Naviglio. The possibility of using the cycle path in full or in sections allows for a longer tour as well as a shorter ride focused on individual bridges and lock remains.
Church, Castello and a rare pontoon bridge
The Chiesa di San Zeno e Nome di Maria is a single-nave Neoclassical church. It was built on 7 July 1549. A 16th-century fresco depicts the Madonna nursing the infant Jesus, with San Rocco and San Zenone at her side. In 1300, Luchino Visconti had Bereguardo equipped with a castle. The Castello di Bereguardo is a 14th-century Visconti manor house in the centre of Bereguardo. The Ponte delle barche is one of the last and rarest examples of a pontoon bridge in Italy.
Traditional festivals with their own history
The Fiera di Merci e Bestiame began in 1926 as a trade fair for agricultural produce and livestock. The Fiera di Bereguardo takes place on the first Sunday in October. The first Sunday in October links the fair date with the event's historical trading tradition. The Festa di San Zeno combines the traditional livestock exhibition with cultural and folkloric events. At the Palio delle Contrade, the Corsa degli Asini is the highlight.
Museums and parks in the wider Bereguardo region
The Palazzetto degli Eustacchi is located near Bereguardo and is a palace. The Musei Civici Pavia and the Pinacoteca Malaspina are also located nearby; both are museums. In the wider region around Bereguardo are the Parco Parri, the Parco Lombardo Valle del Ticino, the Parco Rozzano and the Parco Pubblico Comunale. The parks in the wider region complement the nearby Palazzetto and museums with further destinations for nature excursions.
