San Giuliano Milanese combines impressive religious buildings, peasant culture and paths through a cultural landscape that is still used to this day. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in San Giuliano Milanese, you will find opportunities here for very different kinds of holiday days: art history, historic sites, exercise in green surroundings and lively festivities.

Gothic Frescoes and Religious Buildings

The Abbazia di Viboldone preserves one of Lombardy’s most extensive and significant complexes of Gothic frescoes. Outstanding works include the Madonna in Maestà e Santi, dated 1349, and a Last Judgment attributed to Giusto de’ Menabuoi. The Umiliati settled in Viboldone in 1176 and arranged for the construction of the abbey, which is dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul.

The Chiesa San Giuliano Martire also features notable details. Its façade is considered one of the most significant examples of Milanese Baroque architecture. During the restoration completed in March 2018, apotropaic lion-head decorations were discovered in the upper areas of the church.

The Chiesa e Ossario di Santa Maria della Neve includes an ossuary with a fresco of the Madonna and Child, which is documented as early as the mid-18th century. The ossuary also has a pronaos supported by two small granite columns. The church contains frescoes by local painters, a painted plaster statue of the Madonna Addolorata and a large oil painting by an unknown artist.

Peasant Heritage and Cultural Landscape

The Museo della civiltà contadina Luisa Carminati is located in the Cascina Carlotta, a traditional 17th-century farmstead with a square courtyard. In seven rooms, the museum displays various testimonies to peasant life. The Cascina Occhiò preserves an irregular courtyard complex with stables and arcades, a manor house facing the garden, and L-shaped residential buildings for agricultural workers. Three large naïve canvases on the courtyard façade depict scenes from peasant life.

Marcite and fontanili are part of San Giuliano Milanese’s distinctive landscape. These agricultural irrigation and cultivation systems are still in use today; their development began in the 11th century.

Paths, Green Spaces and Orientation

The Sentiero dei Giganti begins and ends at the San Giuliano M.se S-Bahn station on line S1 and is one of Italy’s religious routes recognised by the MiT. Parco Nord offers paths for walking, jogging and cycling. Rocca Brivio is served by bus routes Z420 and E038; the stop is called Via Emilia/Rocca Brivio.

Renaissance History in Zivido

“Ritornano i Giganti” is a historical Renaissance re-enactment held every September in the Zivido district. It includes a theatrical reconstruction of the decisive battle fought on the night of 12–13 September. The programme also includes a costume parade in Zivido, in which local residents portray the historical figures and their retinues.
