Bernate Ticino combines wildlife observation with traces of cultural history. In addition to Chiesa di San Giorgio and Lanca di Bernate, Rubone and archaeological finds in the municipality are also worth discovering.

Chiesa di San Giorgio: several eras in one place

Today's Chiesa di San Giorgio features a 17th-century design and incorporates the remains of an older structure into its façade. The bell tower is in a late Gothic style and has biforia windows and small arches. The church also includes a colonnaded crypt with a 13th-century baptistery, which was restored to its original furnishings through more recent restoration work. A 14th-century Gothic lunette is attributed to Bonino da Campione. It depicts the Madonna, the donor, Saint George and Saint James.

Lanca di Bernate and La Ripa Forest

Numerous water birds can be observed in the Lanca di Bernate area, including coots, moorhens, mallards, teal and wigeon. Birds of prey, foxes, hares, hedgehogs, several bat species and coypu are also found there. From the Lanca, the path leads to a clearing with the Calendario Celtico. At its centre stands a large, round granite stone engraved with signs of the Celtic zodiac; the grassy area is bordered by an equal number of trees, each assigned to the corresponding sign. A car park is located by La Ripa Forest on the unpaved road from Bernate to the Lanca. A nature trail begins there, enabling easy and respectful observation of animals and their habitat.

History in Rubone and the municipal area

A visible watchtower dating from the 15th century has been preserved in Rubone. It probably belonged to the structures used to control the Naviglio Grande. Santa Maria della Pace is also located in Rubone. The church was probably rebuilt in the 16th century, possibly by Tommaso Crivelli as part of the renovation of an existing 14th-century church, and remodelled in the 18th century. Palazzo Visconti is the residential wing of the Canonica, is nicknamed “Castello” because of its distinctive forms, and has its main façade facing the Naviglio. The building was erected as a fortified castle in the 15th century and subsequently converted into a villa for holiday stays.

Movibus route Z641 and archaeological traces in Bernate Ticino

Movibus route Z641 runs via Castano Primo, Turbigo, Bernate and Magenta. Celtic graves with grave goods dating from the 3rd to the early 2nd century BC, as well as numerous burials from the Roman period, were discovered in the Bernate Ticino area. Materials from both excavation campaigns are displayed in a specially designated room at the Museo Civico G. Sutermeister in Legnano.
