Holiday apartment in Bellinzago Lombardo: Naviglio, mills and rural history
A holiday apartment in Bellinzago Lombardo takes you to a place where the ancient Naviglio Martesana, rural architecture, mills and recurring festivals come together to create a varied destination. Between waterways, fields and historic farmsteads, cultural discoveries can be combined with active days.
Bellinzago Lombardo between the Naviglio and agricultural landscape
The ancient Naviglio Martesana runs through Bellinzago Lombardo. In its section within the town, you will find a typical agricultural landscape with extensive fields, an irrigation system and farmsteads. Villa Fornaci is also home to one of the five locks on the Naviglio Martesana. Here, hydraulic engineering, agriculture and rural settlement patterns form a clearly recognizable spatial connection.
For your planning, a specific period should be noted: from 31 August 2026 to 1 March 2027, the towpath section of the Naviglio Martesana between Gorgonzola and Bellinzago Lombardo will be closed to traffic because of work on the crossing of the Trobbia stream.
Mill route and traditional craft history
The Giro degli 8 Mulini includes the Mulino Busca in Bellinzago Lombardo. The tour is easy, suitable for everyone and consists of eight stages. The Mulino Busca is an old water mill and represents the history of the area as well as the traditional art of milling. It is believed that the mill had two wooden wheels until it ceased operations; the mill waterfall consists of three drops. The route thus combines a manageable cycling tour with an illustrative chapter of the region’s milling history.
Architectural styles from Villa Fornaci to Villa Carcano
The Cascina Misericordia consists of two buildings facing each other, one from the 17th century and the other from the 19th century. The rural buildings in Villa Fornaci include a former silk mill. Villa Maderna, Moioli has a U-shaped floor plan that is open toward the Naviglio. The Cascina delle Galline, now part of Bellinzago Lombardo, already existed in 1721. Villa Carcano, Arrigoni dates back to the first half of the 19th century and once had a large landing stage on the Naviglio della Martesana, which has since disappeared.
Festivals throughout the year and guidance for choosing your accommodation
The Festa Patronale in honor of the Beata Vergine del Rosario takes place on the first Sunday in September. The Sagra di Primavera takes place on the last Sunday in May and includes entertainment, markets and performances. These two dates provide fixed cultural occasions in the town’s annual calendar.
When choosing your accommodation, you can consider which focus suits your trip: the canal landscape, the easy cycling tour, the history of the mills, the rural buildings or the festivals. For planning your arrival and location, it is also relevant that Villa Fornaci was a station on the branch line of the Milan–Gorgonzola–Vaprio–Bergamo tramway. The easily accessible Gessate station, the terminus of the green Metro Line 2, is located near Bellinzago Lombardo.
