Abbiategrasso is a destination for travelers who want to combine architectural history, canals and active pursuits. The Castello Visconteo was built at the end of the 13th century. Open waterways and green routes complement the solid structures with a different rhythm for the day.

Castello, Churches and Vibrant Culture

In 1381, under Gian Galeazzo, the Castello Visconteo was transformed from a defensive fortress into a stately residence. Thus, this building is notable both for its origins in the late 13th century and for its later use as a residence. The Basilica di Santa Maria Nuova was built from 1365 onward.

In the church of the Ex Convento dell'Annunciata, the fresco cycle “Le storie di Maria” preserves a work dated October 1519 and signed by Nicola Mangone da Caravaggio as Moietta. The Ex Convento dell'Annunciata complex is currently used for conferences, courses, exhibitions, theater performances and concerts.

In the Castelletto district, Palazzo Cittadini Stampa is located directly on the Naviglio Grande. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Nuova has a wheelchair-accessible entrance and wheelchair-accessible parking spaces. The navigable route on the Naviglio Grande runs from the Darsena in Milan to Abbiategrasso; the horizontal section between Abbiategrasso and Gaggiano is currently closed for safety reasons. Anyone including the boat trip in their plans must therefore omit the closed section between Abbiategrasso and Gaggiano.

Canals, Cycle Paths and Green Routes

For activities by the water, the cycle route begins at the Naviglio di Bereguardo in Abbiategrasso. It is approximately 19 kilometers long, flat and suitable for cyclists of all ages and experience levels. Centuries-old trees, green meadows, cultivated fields and the calm waters of the canal line this route. At approximately 19 kilometers, daily planning can be based on the approximate route length and its flat course. The tranquil canal landscape with trees, meadows and fields provides a distinct focus alongside the historic sites in the town.

The Via Francisca del Lucomagno can also be traveled on foot or by bicycle year-round. The cycle path along the Naviglio Grande leads from Castelletto di Abbiategrasso to the Darsena di Porta Ticinese in Milan and runs predominantly on a dedicated path along the canal embankments. The year-round option of the Via Francisca can be included in planning for the respective day independently of a cycling tour.

The Parco della Costituzione and the Parco della Repubblica, better known as Parco della Fossa or simply La Fossa, are the remains of the ancient Fossatum of the Borgo di Abiate. A specific culinary example is the 26th edition of Abbiategusto, featuring “Saperi e Sapori” tasting routes in the underground rooms of the Castello.
