Rivarolo Mantovano: Citadel and Culture
Rivarolo Mantovano combines its historic character with a clearly recognizable urban structure. The centre was transformed into a stately citadel under Vespasiano Gonzaga; three gates with battlement-crowned round towers and an orthogonal street grid shape the townscape. The first urban settlement centre developed around the Pieve di Santa Maria in Ripa d'Adda. For you, this makes history tangible through gates, streets and specific buildings. A holiday apartment in Rivarolo Mantovano opens up a stay in which culture, walks and regional routes can be combined.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria Annunciata was built in 1416 on the foundations of an existing oratory and completed in 1430. Its eight side chapels contain paintings from the Cremonese and Mantuan schools dating from the 15th to the 18th century. In Cividale Mantovano, within the municipality of Rivarolo Mantovano, the Chiesa di Santa Giulia was rebuilt in the 16th century. A foundation stone from 1578 and a baptismal font from 1570 point to this building history.
Piazza Finzi also visibly carries on the history of the town: it was planned by Vespasiano Gonzaga towards the end of the 16th century and completed in the 17th century. Palazzo Pretorio was the historic seat of the municipal magistrates and the Frumentaria, the grain-lending institution associated with the Monte di Pietà. The Torre Civica incorporates the northern gate from the 15th century and received a clock in 1783.
Palazzo Pretorio can be entered free of charge during the town hall's opening hours; visits to offices or historic rooms are also possible by appointment. La sinagoga Ebraica offers a different focus, as the last surviving testimony to the Jewish presence in Rivarolo Mantovano. Traces of the Aron, the Jewish altar, as well as a women's gallery, have been preserved in the main room. Occasional guided tours, cultural events and initiatives dedicated to preserving Jewish heritage take place only by prior reservation or during special openings by the Comune or the Comunità Ebraica di Mantova. Palazzo Penci displays late-Renaissance forms with a rusticated brick portico and shallow groin vaults; today it is a private residence and is not accessible.
Between the Cammino di Santa Giulia and the cycling loop
For active days, the Cammino di Santa Giulia offers a flat hiking stage from Rivarolo Mantovano to Canneto sull’Oglio, classified as a tourist route. The Cammino di Santa Giulia is also considered a spiritual route connecting churches and parish churches dedicated to Santa Giulia. The 68-kilometre “Tra Oglio e Po” cycling loop leads to the fortifications of Rivarolo Mantovano, including the town wall and imposing round towers. The different route lengths help you choose between a hiking stage and an extended cycling loop.
Local culture also includes the Fondazione Sanguanini, with a small museum preserving old documents, artefacts and testimonies relating to the history and culture of Rivarolo and its surroundings. The foundation also organises the Premio Kramer, an annual jazz event whose name commemorates Gorni Kramer. In Cividale Mantovano, Cascina La Stella is one of the few examples of a closed farm estate in the surrounding area; the building dates from the 16th century.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Rivarolo Mantovano, you can therefore plan your stay around your preferred daily rhythm: historic buildings and accessible rooms, the flat hiking stage of the Cammino di Santa Giulia, the 68-kilometre “Tra Oglio e Po” cycling loop, or museum and jazz themes offer different reasons for planning your days.
