Castel Goffredo presents itself as a destination for a trip where urban history, landscape, regional cuisine and local events stand side by side. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Castel Goffredo, you can choose to focus your days on museums, parks, history and culinary traditions.

Art and History in the Town

At MAST Castel Goffredo, the town’s art and history from the Lombard period to the end of the 16th century take centre stage. The MAST is fully accessible throughout the exhibition route; there are no architectural barriers there. A lift from the ground floor provides access to floors 1 and 2.

Piazza Mazzini is home to the Prepositurale di Sant’Erasmo Vescovo e Martire. It was built in the second half of the 16th century within the walls of Castel Goffredo and houses the wooden Crocifisso Miracoloso from the 15th century. Also on the square, Palazzo Gonzaga-Acerbi occupies the entire northern side. It served as the residence of Castel Goffredo’s successive rulers. In 1511, it became the residence of Marquis Aloisio Gonzaga, who made Castel Goffredo the capital of a fief that also included Castiglione and Solferino.

Parks and Landscape in the Surrounding Area

For landscape impressions, there is the park garden of Tenuta S. Apollonio, which covers an area of more than 70,000 square metres. The surroundings of Castel Goffredo also include Parco Desenzani, Parco Pastore and Parco dell'Ossario; all three are parks. Monte Rocchetta is a hill in the surroundings of Castel Goffredo.

The surroundings of Castel Goffredo also contain the Museo Internazionale della Croce Rossa, Fondazione Palazzo Bondoni Pastorio, the Museum of Resurgence and the Associazione Teatro Sociale Montichiari. Each of these four destinations is a museum in the surrounding area.

Regional Cuisine and Regular Events

Cuisine also shapes the character of Castel Goffredo. Tortello amaro is considered a traditional dish of Castel Goffredo, whose origins are regarded as ancient and which forms part of the town’s gastronomic tradition. It is filled with the herb Erba di San Pietro, which is associated with the Castel Goffredo region. Scientifically, this herb is known as Tanacetum balsamita and also as Chrysanthemum balsamita or Balsamita major.

The Festa del Tortello Amaro has taken place on the third weekend of June since its first edition on 15 June 1996. In addition, since 2011 Castel Goffredo has hosted Libri sotto i portici, a monthly used-book market held on the first Sunday of every month.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Holiday Apartment

When choosing your holiday apartment, you can use your preferred daily rhythm as a guide: MAST and Piazza Mazzini represent art and history, the park garden, parks and Monte Rocchetta represent landscape, while Tortello amaro and the two events represent regional traditions. If you are planning around different interests, you can assess the location of your holiday apartment according to whether cultural visits, landscape or culinary events should shape your holiday.
