Culture and History in Poggio Rusco

When you rent a holiday apartment in Poggio Rusco, religious buildings, remembrance culture, choral music and cycling routes await you within a compact thematic area. Historical construction periods, distinctive memorial architecture and destinations in the wider surrounding area give the choice of location a clear cultural profile.

One of the defining buildings is the Chiesa Parrocchiale S.S. Nome di Maria. It was built from 1748 to 1770 in a light Baroque style based on a design by the architect Nicolini. The Chiesetta/Oratorio del Tagliaferro was completed in 1771. In addition to the altar, it has vaulted openings that may have served as galleries for women and guests of honour.

The present-day Chiesa di Dragoncello was built in the 1960s based on a design by Prof. Lino Morselli to commemorate those who fell in the famous “Operazione Herring”. Its extraordinary, skyward-reaching form is reminiscent of hands folded in prayer and also refers to the paratroopers who descended from the sky. The Ara Monument commemorating the paratroopers who fell in the “Operazione Herring” was inaugurated on 30 April 1965.

The Chiesa di Stoppiaro replaced an earlier, smaller church that was demolished at the beginning of the 17th century. The Torre Falconiera o Colombara (Culumbèra) probably served as a lookout post or refuge in times of danger. A Montesanti dating from the late 18th century was reconstructed and extended by Giovanni Tonoli in 1861.

Choral Music and Destinations in the Surrounding Area

The Rassegna Corale has been documented in Poggio Rusco in autumn since 2007. Six choirs perform at this event, including one choir from abroad. This musical focus complements the town’s historical architecture.

The Museo Civico Mirandola, the Parrocchia Di Santa Maria Maggiore and the Chiesa del Duomo are located in the vicinity of Poggio Rusco. The wider regional area also includes the Dark Room SilmarArtGallery, the Parco delle Rimembranze, the Parco della Resistenza and the Parco Martiri delle Foibe.

Cycling Routes and Regional Perspectives

For active days during your holiday, the cycling network of the Oltrepò Mantovano provides a broad regional framework. It covers more than 470 kilometres and connects villages and districts, historic buildings, museums, water-management facilities, parks and nature reserves. The 48-kilometre grey route “I sapori dell’Oltrepò” passes through Poggio Rusco.

The different distance figures help you assess the desired scale of your plans: the regional network represents a wide-ranging selection, while the route passing through Poggio Rusco identifies a specific theme for an excursion. This allows you to combine the choice of a holiday apartment in Poggio Rusco with cultural interests or cycling, without limiting your choice of location to just one type of trip.

Getting There and Choosing a Location

The Strada Provinciale 496 Virgiliana connects Poggio Rusco with the provincial capital and nearby Ferrara. Poggio Rusco is also a strategic railway junction where the Bologna–Verona–Brenner Brenner Corridor, which is being expanded, meets the railway connection between the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian Seas.

A holiday apartment in Poggio Rusco fits into this consideration as an accommodation option, while these transport connections and excursion destinations provide orientation for further planning.
