Culture and History in Calolziocorte

Calolziocorte combines impressive religious buildings, historical references and a varied landscape. A defining destination is the Santuario di Santa Maria del Lavello, built around the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries by the brothers of the Order of the Servants of Mary. At the same time, the sanctuary is a stop on the international cultural and religious Cloister Route, the Strada dei Chiostri.

The Chiesa di San Lorenzo Vecchio also represents the historical side of the town. It is considered an example of medieval architecture and preserves an extensive fresco cycle. In Foppenico, the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo is described as an octagonal temple in a historical classification dated 20 May 1844. Lavello was referred to as a “castello” in 1014.

Waterfront Nature and Botanical Diversity

The landscape around Calolziocorte ranges from the botanical garden to the protected wetland. The Giardino Botanico di Villa De Ponti covers one hectare and is home to around 500 different plant species.

Larger in scale is the SIC Palude di Brivio. It extends over 302 hectares between the municipalities of Calolziocorte, Monte Marenzo, Brivio and Cisano Bergamasco and lies entirely within the boundaries of Parco Adda Nord. The Palude di Brivio is home to one of the few populations of the European pond turtle, Emys orbicularis, in the Upper Lombard plain. Via Lago Vecchio serves as an access route to the Palude di Brivio.

Active Days on the Cycling and Walking Route

For active excursions, “La ciclopedonale dei laghi di Garlate e Olginate” is available. The route is approximately 18 kilometres long and provides a clearly defined option for cycling and walking itineraries.

Markets and Regular Events

The Fiera Del Lavello takes place on the second Sunday in September in Parco Martiri delle Foibe on the banks of the Lavello. The Mercatino dell'Antico Monastero is held from March to November on the second Sunday of each month in Parco Martiri delle Foibe. Both events take place in the same park, but differ in character and can each play a distinct role in planning the timing of your stay.

Another traditional event is the Fera di “Pomm”. It takes place on 8 December in Centro/Casale and includes the sale of fruit and confectionery.
