Gisazio between woodland, lake and village history

Gisazio is considered a small hamlet above Lake Como and is surrounded by woodland. Locally, Gisazio is also known by the dialect name “Sasc”. The dialect name forms part of the hamlet’s linguistic history.

Santa Maria Maddalena and village culture

The church of Santa Maria Maddalena in Gisazio dates from 1596. Its altarpiece is attributed to Giovanni Battista Fumeo. The church therefore represents a clearly dated period in the history of the village.

A community-supported book about Gisazio tells the story and traditions of the place and was created with the participation of local residents. The “Pollibreria” is a book-exchange project in Gisazio and became a focal point of the village. At least two events about the village are organised there every year.

The local history includes the Maresi family, one of the oldest families in Gisazio. They ran a namesake osteria in the village, which closed around 1958. The former osteria is therefore part of the hamlet’s culinary past. As part of the municipal programme featuring culinary walks, an excursion to Gisazio and Bologna was planned for 5 July.

For those interested in culture, the church of Santa Maria Maddalena, its attributed altarpiece, the community book and the Pollibreria are among the specific subjects associated with Gisazio.

Trails with a clearing, stream and washhouses

On the Sentiero del Viandante, the trail to Gisazio passes through a pleasant clearing with the Chiesetta della Maddalena. The Sentiero del Viandante crosses the stream flowing down from Gisazio on a small bridge.

Perledo adds historic public washhouses to the route. They served as communal meeting places where women washed clothes and exchanged news. A route through Perledo’s districts leads to such washhouses, including the Lavatoio di Gisazio. At around 7 kilometres, the washhouse route can be incorporated into the day’s itinerary as a separate section. When visiting the washhouses in the districts, the approximate distance of 7 kilometres can be included in the day’s planning as a separate time block.

Getting there: Perledo Night Bus to Gisazio

The free, on-demand Perledo Night Bus connects the railway station with the hamlets around the municipality of Perledo. There are around 13 request stops in the area around Perledo. Gisazio has a bus stop that can be reserved via WhatsApp. The reservation message should be sent at least 20 minutes before the requested pick-up time; this advance notice is part of the journey planning.

For a day itinerary, the journey to the hamlet can be included as a separate travel section before the walks through Perledo.

The washhouse route and the Night Bus serve different purposes: the route leads through the districts to historic washhouses, while the bus connects the railway station with the hamlets around Perledo.
