Holiday apartment in Dongo: Culture and mountain landscapes
Dongo lies at the foot of Valle Albano. The valley runs alongside the lake and connects Italy with Switzerland via the Passo S. Jorio.
Palazzo Manzi and Sacred Art
Palazzo Manzi was built in 1824 based on a design by Pietro Gilardoni. The Sala d’Oro impresses with extensive gilding, reliefs and stucco work. The ceiling features a fresco of Parnassus attributed to one of Appiani’s pupils. The decoration of the Sala d’Oro combines gilding, reliefs and stucco work with the ceiling fresco; for those interested in culture, it represents a clear focus on architectural history and decorative art.
The churches also lead through different eras. The Chiesa di Santo Stefano has Romanesque origins and was rebuilt in 1716. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Martinico was built in the 11th century and has a side façade dating from the 14th century. It also houses a gilded silver cross dated 1513 from the workshop of F. Ser Gregori. The two churches therefore offer different historical highlights: Santo Stefano has Romanesque origins, while Santa Maria Martinico combines architecture and furnishings from several clearly dated periods.
Contemporary History at the Museo della Fine della Guerra
The Museo della Fine della Guerra is located in Palazzo Manzi in Dongo. Using multimedia and interactive content, it presents the history of the resistance on Lake Como and the events that led to the end of the Second World War. The interactive tour extends across seven rooms on the ground floor of Palazzo Manzi. Palazzo Manzi thus houses the Sala d’Oro and the museum, with its seven-room tour, in the same building.
The Santuario Madonna delle Lacrime
The Santuario Madonna delle Lacrime was built between 1553 and 1603 beside the Strada “Regina”. Inside, there are remarkable wood carvings depicting the Last Supper and the Crucifixion, as well as frescoes in the presbytery. The Santuario thus contains both wood carvings and frescoes.
Valle Albano and Surrounding Peaks
The peaks Costone del Bregagno, Monte Pizzone, Monte l’Usciolo and Monte La Nava are also located around Dongo. For those interested in landscapes, the valley area of Valle Albano is thus linked with four peaks in the vicinity of Dongo.
