Church, Art and History in Porzano

Porzano combines ecclesiastical history with a rural setting. The Church of San Martino is the parish church of Porzano, a district of Leno in the Province of Brescia. It therefore lies at the heart of a place whose history is closely connected with religious buildings, local customs and historic routes.

An important earlier connection is with the Santa Giulia monastery: it founded a chapel in Porzano dedicated to Saint Martin, which was dependent on the parish church of Bagnolo Mella. A small community lived around this chapel.

The church's furnishings also offer concrete points of interest for a cultural stay. The restoration of San Martino began in 2015 and included the interior furnishings with frescoes, stucco and altars, as well as three altarpieces. Among the restored works is the painting “Madonna con Santi e putti” by Carlo Baciocchi, dated 1672.

Another historical focus is the large rural Campo Marchione cemetery. It is located in Porzano in the municipality of Leno and is a Lombard archaeological site with excavated female burials from the 6th and 7th centuries. In this way, the archaeological past complements the church art and provides a second way of accessing the history of the area.

Paths through Fields and a Water Landscape

Porzano can also be discovered through its paths and cultivated land. Stage 28 of the Cammino di Santa Giulia passes through Porzano, running through cultivated fields and along unpaved paths. The historic route “Dai Longobardi ai fontanili” passes several archaeological, architectural and landscape attractions in the Leno–Porzano section.

The rural character also includes two waterways. The now-covered Vaso Molina re-emerges in Porzano at a point where a weir is regularly operated to distribute water to the fields. The Vaso Uggera flows south of Porzano towards the cultivated areas and forms part of the local irrigation system. These waterways show how closely the landscape is connected to its agricultural use.

Living Traditions and Religious Festivals

The living Via Crucis is considered a genuine tradition in Porzano. Dozens of costumed performers took part in one such presentation, including centurions and apostles. A living Via Crucis also brought the community of Leno together in Porzano to celebrate the Passion of Christ in the streets of the village.

Another religious event was the Marian celebration of the parish of San Martino in Porzano di Leno, known as the “Feste Mariane Quinquennali”. It took place from 7 September to 15 September 2025.
