Acquafredda brings together the Museo della civiltà rurale in Palazzo Bonzi, historic churches, the Monumento ai caduti and local traditions. Rural everyday history, historic buildings and culinary customs coexist here in different forms.

Rural culture at the Museo della civiltà rurale

The Museo della civiltà rurale displays around 500 catalogued objects in four large rooms. The collection is divided into six broad categories: agro-silvo-pastoral activities, household economy and rituals, crafts, hunting and fishing, trade and public services, and school activities. This means you encounter not only individual objects, but also different aspects of everyday life and the working world of the past.

The museum is housed in the attic of Palazzo Bonzi. Palazzo Bonzi was built in 1667 and was formerly the palace of the Counts Bonzi; today, it serves as the seat of the Acquafredda municipal administration. The building has a portico with five arches and a loggia on the first floor, also with five arches. The museum and palazzo thus bring together everyday history, architectural history and present-day municipal life in one place.

Planning your visit with clear conditions

For a museum visit, you can arrange a guided tour in advance with volunteer guides. These tours are free of charge and are estimated to last two hours. The museum can also be visited on request and during the Funzione d'Ottobre. When accessing the museum, note the layout of the floors: the first floor of the Museo della civiltà rurale is accessible by lift, while the second floor is reached by stairs.

Churches between the Castello and the town centre

The Chiesa di San Bernardino da Siena was built within the castrum in the oldest part of Acquafredda. The oldest part of Acquafredda is now called Castello. The church probably dates from the end of the 15th century. Its bell tower dates from the 16th century.

The Chiesa di San Biagio Vescovo e Martire is located in the centre of Acquafredda, a municipality in the province of Brescia in the eastern Bassa Bresciana. It is a former parish church with a Neoclassical façade. Inside, it features a barrel vault, columns, Corinthian capitals and painted wall decorations.

Remembrance and the Funzione d'Ottobre

The Monumento ai caduti in Acquafredda is also part of the townscape. The monument was inaugurated on 24 April 1921 and is designed as an obelisk with marble and bronze elements and reliefs.

The Funzione d'Ottobre is considered Acquafredda's most important traditional event. For the 2024 Funzione d'Ottobre, the municipality of Acquafredda organised an extensive programme of cultural, sporting and leisure activities. The focus was on celebrating local history, traditions and the community.

A tradition on the plate

The cuisine also preserves a distinctive custom. Baccalà in umido is traditionally eaten on the Saturday evening after Ash Wednesday and is also known as “baccalà di Carnevale”.
