Ceratello lies at an altitude of over 800 m in a panoramic location and is the highest historic settlement centre in the Costa area. A hike from Costa Volpino to Rifugio Magnolini first leads through the Valle di Supine and then along the mountain’s southwestern slopes, passing alpine huts and offering views of Lake Iseo. Rifugio M.O. Leonida Magnolini is located in the hamlet of Pian della Palù at an altitude of 1,610 m between the Clusone basin and Val Camonica. It was built by the Lovere section of the CAI and opened in 1948.

Churches, Castle History and Village Landscapes

In the hamlet of Volpino, the most important 12th-century castle belonged to the Brusati family. Its destruction was decided in a later peace treaty between Bergamo and Brescia; it took place in 1198. Within the castle, a church dedicated to Saint Stephen has been documented since 1132. The Church of Santo Stefano dominates the summit of the hill of Volpino. It can be reached either via a steep climb with a short staircase or via the more convenient narrow Via Sabotino, which bypasses the centre.

The surrounding hamlets also preserve distinctive sacred sites. In Qualino, the Church of Sant’Ambrogio stands on an extensive terrace accessible by bus and offers sweeping panoramic views of Lake Iseo and lower Valcamonica. Its present appearance was shaped by extensions in the 17th century and in 1902 and stands on a partially preserved 15th-century structure; inside, this older fabric is visible in fragments of frescoes. The Church of Santi Bartolomeo e Gottardo lies on the southern edge of Branico overlooking the Oglio Valley and preserves an interesting cycle of 14th-century paintings.

San Giorgio Martire stands above Ceratello on a hill where a castle presumably once stood. The grand staircase leading to the church was built between 1937 and 1939. In Flaccanico, San Matteo rises above the village; the church square opens onto an impressive view. Sant’Antonio Abate in Corti is a notable example of contemporary religious architecture and replaces the former parish seat on the hill.
