Those who want to get to know the town through more than just its beach will find specific points of interest for walks and tours of the town between Via De Maestri, Castello Di Spotorno, the Museo del Turismo and the paths leading into the olive groves.

More than two kilometres of beach and crystal-clear sea give Spotorno a distinctly maritime character. At the same time, Via De Maestri, with its arches and small squares, is considered an almost intact example of spontaneous architecture. The coast directs the view towards the sea, while Via De Maestri guides the tour towards the arches and squares of the townscape.

Castello Di Spotorno and the history of the coast

Castello Di Spotorno, located in the vicinity of Spotorno, is a castle; its ruins offer a panoramic viewpoint. The watchtowers situated on the hills around Spotorno were built towards the end of the 16th century to spot Turkish galleys at an early stage and allow people unable to fight to find shelter in the Castello. At the ruins, panoramic views can be combined with a historic setting; at the watchtowers, the former observation of Turkish galleys takes centre stage.

Museum, sundials and Oratorio di S. Caterina

The Museo del Turismo is located next to Spotorno’s town library and tells the story of how Spotorno was discovered as a destination for holidays and health cures. Spotorno also has five sundials. The first is a large sundial on the façade of Spotorno’s parish church and shows the passage of the hours according to the old “uso italico”. The Oratorio di S. Caterina preserves woodwork and artistic paintings. The sundial at the parish church offers a specific detail for a tour through the town; in the Oratorio, the woodwork and paintings direct attention towards the works of art.

Walking route and D.H. Lawrence plaque

The right-hand path of the tourist walking route leads through terraced olive groves to the edge of the Bosco della Lexea. A plaque commemorating the centenary of D.H. Lawrence’s stay in Spotorno can serve as the starting point for a route dedicated to D.H. Lawrence. The edge of the Bosco della Lexea marks the transition from the olive grove to the forest; the plaque establishes a literary connection with this setting.

Tourist information and diving

For orientation on site, the Casa del Turismo, inaugurated in 2017, houses the central tourist information office. It provides information materials, brochures and services for visitors and residents. At the Isola di Bergeggi, located near Spotorno, diving is permitted only when accompanied by an authorised dive centre and never at night. Anyone wishing to dive at the Isola di Bergeggi must arrange the dive with an authorised dive centre; it is not permitted at night.
