Cairo Montenotte: History, Nature and Culture

Cairo Montenotte combines historic buildings, nature trails and regional specialities. Between medieval traces, hiking trails, cycling routes, museums and local festivals, there are a variety of themes for a journey through the town and its municipal area.

History in Gates, Palaces and Churches

Porta Soprana is a pointed-arch gate in the surviving sections of the 14th-century city walls; the tower above it was restored in 1937. Palazzo Scarampi is a 15th-century aristocratic palace and was once a residence of the Del Carretto family. The parish church of San Lorenzo dates from the 17th century and was restored and enlarged in 1816. The medieval fortifications once also included the Torre Carceraria delle Prigioni, a structure that formed part of Cairo Montenotte’s city walls, which consisted of nine towers.

Further historical highlights can be found in Ferrania and Rocchetta Cairo. The Abbazia di Ferrania was founded in 1096; it contains a 12th-century memorial plaque dedicated to Agnese di Poitiers. The Ferrania Film Museum is a museum of industrial and territorial culture dedicated to the film factory founded in Ferrania in 1917. The Museo Diffuso Ferrania aims to present the documented history of Ferrania, a district of the town of Cairo Montenotte, associated with the factory of the same name, through information panels throughout the municipal area. Rocchetta Cairo is a medieval village that developed around the local castle. The Ponte Romano in Rocchetta Cairo enabled traffic along the Via del Sale.

Nature, Trails and Wildlife Observation

The Adelasia Regional Nature Reserve is crossed by hiking trails, including the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri and the Sentiero Bormida Natura. The reserve also contains the “I segreti del bosco” educational trail near Cascina Miera, in the municipal area of Cairo Montenotte. In the forests, the trenches of the Redoute Bric Tesoro from the Battle of Montenotte on 11 and 12 April 1796 are visible.

The wildlife oasis of Rocchetta Cairo also expands the nature theme with a spacious plain created by the Bormida di Spigno river. In the public area of Il Prato delle Ferrere, you will find benches, shaded seating areas and a permanent educational exhibition. A photographic trail there is dedicated to the animals of the Valle delle Ferrere.

Cycling Routes and Hikes for Different Days

For cycling tours, “Pedaluma insem” offers a 30-kilometre circular route suitable for mountain bikes and e-bikes. “Pedaluma Insem Kids” is aimed at children and young people and combines a route with a skills test accompanied by MTB instructors. One edition of “Torna Er Me Paìs” also offered two circular hikes: a longer 14-kilometre route with 400 metres of elevation gain and a duration of approximately six hours, as well as a shorter 9-kilometre route with 300 metres of elevation gain and a duration of approximately four hours. Both started and ended at the Convento di San Francesco.

Festivals, Books and Film Culture

Cairo Montenotte also showcases its cultural side through events. The third edition of “Cairo Monte Noir” was a three-day thriller and crime festival with free admission at Palazzo Scarampi and the Biblioteca Civica “F.C. Rossi”. The third edition of the Fiera del Libro in Cairo Montenotte included more than 30 events, two exhibitions, workshops and guided tours. The Spazio Artistico Culturale “Angelo Siri” is located in the former Oratorio di San Sebastiano on Piazza Savonarola. From 22 May to 24 May 2026, the EMULSIONI Festival took place in Ferrania, a participatory festival for analogue photography.

Local Speciality and Historical Festivities

The culinary identity of Cairo Montenotte includes Tira, a speciality made from dough filled with sausage, which carries the municipal De.Co. designation. At the Sagra della Tira, it is offered in several varieties, including a gluten-free version. At Cairo Medievale, the gastronomic offering included taverns serving dishes from the local tradition. At the same time, during “Cairo Medievale”, the town centre was brought to life for five days by processions in historical costumes, allegorical parades, wandering entertainers, fire-eaters and musicians.

Getting to Cairo Montenotte

Cairo Montenotte can be reached via the A6 Savona–Turin motorway, the Altare exit and then State Road 29 towards Carcare and Cairo.
