Fiumaretta di Ameglia – Beach, River and Water Sports

Fiumaretta di Ameglia lies on the left bank of the Magra River, opposite Bocca di Magra. The river shapes both the landscape and the opportunities for activities on the water. The beaches consist of fine, firm sand; at the same time, the nearby Magra estuary is a particularly interesting area for observing herring gulls (Larus argentatus and Larus ridibundus), shags (Phalacrocorax aristotelis desmarestii) and Sandwich terns (Sterna sandvicensis).

Beach, River and Local History

In ancient times, the area of Fiumaretta lay in front of the port of the city of Luni and became increasingly silted up over the centuries. The present-day village was established in 1855 after a former marshland was drained. The drainage of the former marshland thus marked the immediate beginning of the village's present-day history. In the oldest part of Fiumaretta, the planned urban structure can still be recognised.

Water Activities on the Magra

Its particular exposure to the wind makes Fiumaretta a favourite destination for sailing enthusiasts. In the bathing area, there are water sports and boating activities connected with the marina. By canoe, it is possible to cross the river estuary and discover the hidden beaches between Punta Bianca and Punta Corvo.

The Kau Kau Club is a water sports school based in Fiumaretta di Ameglia. Kau Kau School organises courses in kitesurfing, windsurfing, surfing, stand-up paddleboarding and sailing. In addition, Marina 2000-77 is a nautical facility in Fiumaretta on the left bank of the Magra River; it offers services for water sports enthusiasts and recreational boaters. The Circolo Barcaioli Pescatori Sportivi Fiumaretta operates sport fishing that is open to everyone. For water sports enthusiasts, the range of activities in Fiumaretta extends from courses to services related to boats and sport fishing.

Diving and a Flat Stage

Lorenzo Sub is a diving centre in Fiumaretta. It is located in the Montemarcello-Magra-Vara Regional Nature Park and is considered a point of reference for diving and freediving enthusiasts in the Tuscan-Ligurian region. The stage “Da Bocca di Magra a Luni” is completely flat and can be combined with planned breaks and travelling at your own pace.

Church, Summer Festival and Local Specialities

The Church of Sant’Isidoro in Fiumaretta is part of the town's history. It was built as a subsidiary church to provide spiritual support to the farming population. The area was elevated to parish status on 31 December 1947; civil recognition followed on 14 September 1949. At the Ameglia municipality's Notte Blu summer festival, Fiumaretta takes part every year alongside Bocca di Magra as one of the two riverside villages. The two places are connected by a boat and a shuttle service; moving between the banks is therefore as much a part of the festival programme as street food and craft markets.

The activities organised over the years by Associazione Vivere Fiumaretta also included culinary walks with wine tastings in the surrounding area. This complements the events on the water with an activity in the surrounding area.
