Historic Centre and Narrow Carrugi

In Taggia’s historic centre, historic civic architecture and churches are connected by narrow carrugi that climb up the hillside. Via Soleri, also known as Pantàn, is a monumental arcaded street with slate paving that was developed as part of the town’s urban expansion in the 15th century.

Churches, Monastery and Painting

The Dominican monastery complex in Taggia was founded following the preaching of Father Cristoforo da Milano. The rooms on the ground floor of the Dominican monastery house the Pinacoteca del Convento dei Padri Domenicani, next to a 15th-century cloister. The 15th-century cloister dates from the same period as the urban development of Via Soleri. The Pinacoteca displays fragments of polyptychs by Francesco and Lodovico Brea. The museum tour continues in the nearby church of Nostra Signora della Misericordia; its main altar features Lodovico Brea’s Polittico della Misericordia. The Basilica della Madonna Miracolosa preserves elaborate Baroque furnishings as well as paintings by Luca Cambiaso and Francesco Brea. The church of Santa Maria del Canneto dates from the early Middle Ages and was remodelled several times, particularly in the 12th century. Madonna del Canneto is regarded as a typical example of 12th-century architecture; the interior walls of Madonna del Canneto preserve frescoes by Giovanni Cambiaso.

Beaches, Water Sports and Cycle Path

Arma di Taggia has sandy beaches with white sand extending for more than one kilometre. The area is a destination for windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing, diving and sport fishing. An alternative cycle path connects Arma, at the level of the Darsena harbour basin, with the historic centre of Taggia and runs along the Torrente Argentina. Planning can therefore be divided into two focal points: water sports in Arma and the cycling connection along the Torrente Argentina.

Festivals and Regional Flavours

Taggia has celebrated the feast of Saint Benedict every year since the first celebration on 12 February 1626. The Ballo della morte is a traditional ritual involving dance and music that represents the agricultural cycle of death and the rebirth of nature. The Moscatello from the Taggia subzone is also part of the region’s character: it is made from 100% Moscato bianco and is also available in the Frizzante, vendemmia tardiva and Passito styles. The regional character of Moscatello is also evident in the connection between Moscato bianco and the Taggia subzone.
