Santo Stefano d’Aveto combines mountain landscapes, water, protected natural areas and historic buildings. Specific local features include the Cascata del Cucù, several mountains, a mountain bike loop, Castello Malaspina Fieschi Doria, a sanctuary and a historic stone bridge.
Waterfall and protected nature
The path to the Cascata del Cucù runs behind the waterfall and reaches the outlet of a sulphurous spring-water conduit. Beyond the waterfall, the path continues to this outlet. This unusual route connects the waterfall with a second water feature. The sequence of the waterfall and spring-water conduit gives this natural theme a clear, distinct course.
In Prato della Cipolla, some peat bogs are protected because of valuable botanical species. Here, the peat bogs and botanical species draw attention to a different form of landscape than the waterfall. In addition to the watercourse, vegetation therefore becomes a distinct natural feature.
Nearby mountains
Monte Bocco is located near Santo Stefano d’Aveto. Groppo Rosso, Monte di Mezzo and Rocca del Prete are also nearby. The four mountains stand as independent landscape features alongside Prato della Cipolla and the Cascata del Cucù.
Mountain bike loop returning to the starting point
The Passo del Tomarlo–Lago Nero mountain bike loop starts and ends in Santo Stefano d’Aveto. For planning a day on this route, the closed circuit is the most important specific detail: the starting point is reached again at the end. The route name identifies Passo del Tomarlo and Lago Nero as two further fixed reference points.
Castle, sanctuary and historic bridge
Castello Malaspina Fieschi Doria was built in 1164 by the Malaspina family to secure the crossing towards the Po Valley. Its present appearance derives from a reconstruction commissioned by the Doria family over an older fortification dating from the time of the Malaspina. The building’s history thus combines the original securing of the crossing with a later reconstruction. Malaspina and Doria represent two historical phases of the building.
Santuario di Nostra Signora di Guadalupe is considered the only sanctuary in Italy dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe. The main altar features a painting of Our Lady of Guadalupe, flanked by paintings of Saint Stephen and Saint Mary Magdalene. The dedication and the central altarpiece share the same religious reference, while the two flanking paintings complement the main altar’s imagery.
Near Cornaleto, a distinctive single-arch stone bridge crosses the Torrente Gramizza. It was built in 1825 by the municipality of Santo Stefano d’Aveto.
