Churches, Squares and Architectural History in Casella

The foundation stone of the Oratorio di S. Antonio Abate was laid on 11 May 1556. The Chiesa di S. Stefano was built according to a design by Simone Scaniglia between 1718 and 1722. Its floor plan is elliptical. Its sacristy contains a depiction of the Nativity attributed to the school of Domenico Fiasella.

The buildings around Piazza XXV Aprile are distinguished by a uniform architectural style. In a building document from 1691, they were referred to as “Case del mercato”. Palazzo Fieschi includes a tower. Its frieze is illegible today. There are also remains of two sundials and coats of arms on the façade. The palazzo has an open square courtyard. The Palazzetto historically served as the obligatory exit route from Casella for controlling the area and collecting customs duties.

Carpeneta and the Casa del Macello

Carpeneta is a typical rural village in Casella. It has a small square. A chapel is dedicated to the Madonna della Guardia. At the Casa del Macello, all the meat consumed in the feudal territory of Savignone was slaughtered. Casella was also part of this territory.

Focacce di S. Antonio and the StraCasella Running Event

The Focacce di S. Antonio are sold in Casella on 17 January. They are also sold on the following Sunday. Anyone planning around the focaccia tradition in Casella takes both sales days into account. StraCasella is a recurring 10 km running event in Casella. It is non-competitive.

Trails from Casella to the Val Brevenna

The Via dei Feudi Imperiali can be walked from the piazza in Casella to Montemaggio. The route takes approximately one hour. Anyone including this section of the trail in their daily itinerary can allow approximately one hour for it. Trails starting in Casella also connect to numerous routes in the Val Brevenna. These routes lead as far as Monte Antola. The mountain is 1,597 metres high. This elevation can be taken into account when planning routes in the Val Brevenna.

Railway Station, Sports Complex and Public Facilities in Casella

Casella railway station is located at the foot of the built-up area. Directly next to it, the sports complex includes swimming pools, the Palasport, a football pitch and public gardens. Casella’s green space has a running track and a grass football pitch. There is also an equipped recreational area, a children’s park and a dog area. At Casella railway station, the Museo Diffuso 24 km has an interactive touchscreen table.
