Holiday apartment in Carbognano: Churches, Frescoes and Wooded Landscapes

Carbognano combines churches, frescoes, wooded landscapes and local peasant cuisine. Churches, frescoes and historical traces

The Chiesa di San Filippo Neri is considered the world’s first church dedicated to Saint Philip Neri. The Chiesa di Santa Lucia was built around the 11th century at the same time as the castle and has remained at the same location since its construction. The Chiesa di Sant’Anna was built in 1696 and is considered a testament to local Baroque style. The Chiesa della Madonna della Valle features 16th-century frescoes by Pastura. Together, these religious buildings offer different points of connection to the area’s cultural history. Santa Lucia refers to the period of the castle, Sant’Anna to local Baroque style, and the Madonna della Valle contains frescoes by Pastura.

The former church of Santa Maria was completed in 1522 under the direction of Giulia Farnese. It contains frescoes from 1581 created by pupils of the Zuccari brothers and has been a multifunctional cultural center since 2018. Giulia Farnese therefore remains connected to two specific places in the village: the former church of Santa Maria and the Castello Farnese.

The Lavatoio del castello was built at the beginning of the 17th century at the instigation of Francesco Colonna, lord of Carbognano, as a public service for the women of the town. It has a covered, elliptical basin divided into three sections. Giulia Farnese also spent the last twenty years of her life in Carbognano’s Castello Farnese.

Nature and wooded surroundings

The landscape around Carbognano includes old chestnut groves, hazelnut plantations, and beech and oak forests. The wooded areas are suitable for excursions and trekking. Around Carbognano, old chestnut groves and hazelnut plantations alternate with beech and oak forests.

Gavinelle and local festivals

Gavinelle is a traditional, simple pasta dish from Carbognano’s peasant cuisine, similar to fettuccine. In October, the Castagna is celebrated in the Carbognano area. On May 26, Carbognano celebrates the festival of its two co-patrons, Sant’Eutizio da Ferento and San Filippo Neri. Gavinelle represents a simple dish, while the Castagna in October adds to the festival calendar. Carbognano’s festival calendar therefore extends from the patronal feast on May 26 to the Castagna in October.
