Holiday apartment in Canino: Etruscan heritage, Vulci and regional festivals

Canino combines historical evidence with experiences in nature and regional festivals. These include the former San Francesco monastery, historic churches, the Teatro comunale Luciano Bonaparte and the Sagra dell’Asparago Verde.

Archaeology and historic buildings in Canino

The Museo della Ricerca Archeologica di Vulci is housed in the former San Francesco monastery. The museum includes a life-size reconstruction of the fresco cycle from the Tomba François. The Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Vulci displays finds dating from the third millennium BC to the Roman period, including Etruscan bucchero and Greek figural vessels.

Canino’s churches also bear witness to different periods. The Chiesa Collegiata dei SS. Giovanni e Andrea was built from 1783 onwards in the late Baroque style and consecrated in 1793. Alexandrine de Bleschamp is buried in its Bonaparte Chapel. The Chiesa di Santa Croce has a Romanesque portal with carved floral motifs and a zoomorphic head. The Fontana Farnesiana was commissioned by the Farnese family in the first half of the 16th century. In the medieval district of Le Buche, the façades of historic palaces preserve heraldic friezes and coats of arms.

Theatre, festivals and local specialities

The Teatro comunale Luciano Bonaparte was renovated more recently and restored to its original function as a theatre. Performances, book presentations, conferences and other artistic events take place there regularly. The Sagra dell’Asparago Verde di Canino offers a special combination of local life and culinary traditions; it takes place every year on 25 April or shortly afterwards. At this festival, a record-breaking omelette is traditionally prepared with more than 1,500 eggs and almost 120 kilograms of asparagus.

At the Sagra dell’Olivo, guided tours of oil mills and tastings on toasted bread are offered. These are complemented by typical dishes served in the traditional cellars that are open to visitors.

Vulci between educational trails and ancient roads

The Area della città etrusco-romana di Vulci is now an archaeological and nature park with educational trails that are also accessible to people with reduced mobility. In Vulci, the Decumanus Maximus leads to the banks of the Fiora and the remains of the ancient Ponte Rotto. Archeotrekking in Vulci is a seven-hour guided hike of low difficulty; it takes place only by prior reservation for groups of 20 or more people.

The archaeological diversity also includes the Domus del Criptoportico, with its black-and-white mosaics and a private thermal complex. In the immediate vicinity of Canino, near Cellere and Canino, lies the Cascata del Pellico. The ruins of ancient Castellardo are located in the wooded landscape of Canino.
