Tor Vergata combines a medieval signal tower with archaeological and green themes, as well as university sports facilities. This offers several possible focuses for a trip: history and museums, time outdoors or sporting activities. When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to first decide which of these themes you want to shape your stay.

A Medieval Signal Tower and the MAUT

Torre Vergata was built as a signal tower in the 12th to 13th century. A restored section of the tower is incorporated into Villa Gentile. The country house at Villa Gentile is home to the Museo Archeologico Universitario del Territorio, or MAUT for short. This places a historic building with a clearly defined former function alongside an archaeological museum as distinct cultural points of interest. Following restoration work, the section of the tower incorporated into Villa Gentile was made visible to the academic and non-academic public.

When planning your trip, you can focus your interest in history here on two themes: the medieval origins of the signal tower and the archaeological focus of the MAUT. If you are particularly interested in the tower, you can keep its restored section incorporated into Villa Gentile in mind; if you enjoy museums, the MAUT offers a point of interest in its own right. These places do not make up a prescribed visitor route, but rather offer different ways to spend your time in Tor Vergata.

Green Spaces, a Garden and Events

Parco Salvador Allende is a green space covering around 12 hectares, crossed by an ancient Roman road. The park thus brings together two aspects: green space and a historic trace that runs through the area. For anyone interested in ancient routes, this combination sets it apart from a visit focused mainly on the signal tower or museum.

The Botanical Garden of the University of Rome Tor Vergata is designed as a space for everyone, combining outdoor activities with educational, cultural and scientific offerings. Guided tours are available for all age groups. If you are travelling with children of different ages, such a tour can be an activity to enjoy together. Check the current arrangements in advance if you plan to take a guided tour.

Sport is also part of the garden’s programme: events involving various cycling and running clubs are held regularly at the Orto Botanico. The Festa dello sport and the Settimana della cultura sportiva are associated with the month of May; thousands of students and external visitors attend both. As each edition has its own dates, it is worth checking the programme before your trip. This lets you give different weight to the garden, culture and events depending on when you travel.

Sports Facilities and Shuttle

The Tor Vergata Sporting Center has three small-sided football pitches with new-generation turf, two padel courts and a multi-purpose court for basketball and volleyball. A privately operated golf practice range in Tor Vergata, run under a contract, can also be used at night. These facilities offer a different focus from the area’s historical and botanical themes. If sport is an important part of your plans, check the current facilities and booking information for the golf practice range in advance.

During the 2026 seasonal operating period, a university shuttle bus runs Monday to Friday between Tor Vergata station on Via Fermi in the municipality of Frascati and the Macroarea di Scienze MFN. Along the way, it stops at locations serving the various macro-areas and faculties. This may be relevant for getting around if your stay is connected to the university area. Before travelling, check whether the seasonal service runs during your travel dates and what the timetable is.
