Osteria Nuova: History, Landscape and Culture
Accommodation in Osteria Nuova
Osteria Nuova brings together ecclesiastical heritage and architecture with green spaces in the agricultural areas of Municipio Roma XV. This offers different ways to experience the area: history, rural architecture and landscape. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider which of these aspects you would like to shape your trip most.
Ecclesiastical history with specific local connections
The parish of Sant’Andrea Apostolo is located at Via Lamon 15 in Osteria Nuova. The name also appears in a historical commemoration: the Ottavario commemorates the consecration of the church of Sant’Andrea Apostolo in Galeria Antica in 1204. The different place names help distinguish the parish in Osteria Nuova from the historical reference to Galeria Antica.
The parish oratory is dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi. A parish report dated 30 November 2013 describes it as a space of almost 150 square metres, built for meetings and community gatherings. At a patron saint celebration in 2013, a procession carrying an image of Saint Andrew passed through some streets of Osteria Nuova and continued to the Anguillarese. It made a special stop at the local primary and middle school for a blessing. The ecclesiastical references thus span both a consecration commemorated from long ago and a specific event from 2013.
Architecture and landscape: Osteria Nuova and Galeria Antica
The Aste Taurine architectural complex is located at the seventh kilometre of Via Braccianese in Osteria Nuova. A local article from 2014 describes it as a 19th-century rural setting. The nearby Monumento Naturale di Galeria Antica, close to Osteria Nuova on Via Braccianese, offers a different historical time frame: Etruscan remains and the ruins of the medieval town of Galeria are preserved there. The area is currently not open to public use.
Together, these places point to different historical layers: Etruscan remains, the medieval town and a complex described as a 19th-century rural setting. The green spaces in the agricultural areas of Municipio Roma XV add a landscape dimension to this picture. Cultural history and rural character thus stand alongside one another as different interests to guide your travel choices.
Music and planned changes in the area
The CrossRoads Live Club offers another cultural highlight, with live music and performances by national and international artists. The club was founded in October 2008 as a versatile concert venue in Rome. Its music programme adds a contemporary perspective to the historical themes; consider it if live music would suit your trip.
Planned municipal changes are also relevant for getting around. A renewal plan for Osteria Nuova proposed connecting existing pavements and creating new pedestrian crossings to provide a continuous and safer walking route. Bus stops were also planned on both sides of Via Anguillarese. A roundabout with a diameter of about 40 metres was to be built where Via Anguillarese and Via Braccianense meet.
The redesign of Piazza Osteria Nuova, announced on 18 June 2025, included new paved surfaces, play equipment on shock-absorbing flooring, planted beds, a wooden pergola and benches. If you are travelling with children, the planned play area may help you plan your visit. Check the current status of the work before including the planned routes or the redesign of the square in your plans.
