Nemi combines a small crater lake, densely wooded slopes, scenic forest trails and a layered history. It is also home to special places such as the Belvedere Ceyrat, the Terrazza degli Innamorati and La mano dei desideri. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Nemi, you can choose the character of your stay according to whether you want to focus on nature, walks, views or historical discoveries.

Crater lake, forest and panoramic views

The area around Nemi lies entirely within the Parco Regionale dei Castelli Romani. The nature park is suitable for excursions, trekking and mountain biking. Lago di Nemi is a small lake in the crater of an extinct volcano. Its slopes are densely wooded. The forest trails above Lago di Nemi offer numerous panoramic views of the densely vegetated lake. Nemi, the surrounding area and the forests also provide numerous opportunities for walks.

The Museo delle Navi Romane opened in 1939 and was designed by Vittorio Morpurgo. It displays preserved remains of Roman ships as well as finds from the Castelli Romani area and the nearby Santuario di Diana Nemorense. The museum was the first example of a museum structure specifically designed for its contents, thereby combining architecture, archaeology and the history of the lake landscape.

The monumental complex of the Santuario di Diana Nemorense was laid out on three terraces. In archaic times, its grounds became the federal centre of the Latin cities that gathered at the Lucus Ferentinae, also known as Bosco Ferentino. This site was located on Monte Savello near Albano Laziale. The parish church of Santa Maria del Pozzo also dates back to earlier periods: it was built at the beginning of the 17th century at the request of Mario and Pompeo Frangipane, replacing an earlier church. That church had been built by Cistercian monks in the 12th century within the walls of the fortified castle and dedicated to Santa Maria de Puteo.

The history of Palazzo Ruspoli begins in the 9th or 10th century with a tower that was later known as the Saracen Tower. The medieval castle centre developed around this tower in the 12th century. The Belvedere Ceyrat offers a different perspective on Nemi and is located at the highest point of the town. From there, the view extends across Nemi’s rooftops, the volcanic lake and the sea.

Special places for shared discoveries

At La mano dei desideri, visitors can place their face on the second, ornamentally tattooed hand to make a wish. The Terrazza degli Innamorati was inaugurated on 14 February 2015. It takes its name from the mythological love stories of Diana and Virbius, as well as Numa Pompilius and the nymph Egeria. Near the spring in the Vallone Tempesta, a great variety of amphibians and insects typical of wetlands live, including dragonflies, bugs, mosquitoes and butterflies.

Getting there and choosing the right stay

From Rome, Nemi can be reached via the Via Appia and then the Via Nemorense shortly after Genzano. Alternatively, the Via dei Laghi leads from Ciampino Airport to Nemi, passing along Lago di Castelgandolfo. For a holiday apartment in Nemi, this results in a clear choice based on interests: the forest trails and lake are ideal for walks and observing nature, while the museum, sanctuary, church and Palazzo Ruspoli provide a historical focus. This leaves room for active days, viewpoints and cultural discoveries without reducing Nemi’s different facets to a single travel experience.
