Ardea combines coast, archaeology, art and local specialties to create a varied travel destination. You can shape your stay around beach days on the Riviera di Roma, historical discoveries, garden culture and regional delights. This makes Ardea suitable for planning a holiday where the same focus does not have to be the centre of attention every day.

Experience Art and History Consciously

A special cultural attraction is the Museo Giacomo Manzù, an Italian state museum in Ardea dedicated to the work of the sculptor Giacomo Manzù. It opened to the public in 1981 and preserves around 500 works, including approximately 100 sculptures and an extensive graphic collection. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; the last admission is at 7:00 p.m. For planning your day, this precise information about the opening hours is just as important as the focus of the collection: you can decide whether to spend more time exploring sculpture and graphics or plan your museum visit as one of the cultural highlights of your trip.

Ardea’s past is also visible in the Castrum Inui archaeological area on both banks of the lower course of the Fosso dell’Incastro at the SS 601. Castrum Inui was the seaport of Ardea and enabled maritime trade relations with the outside world, particularly with the Greeks. The oldest area dates from between the 6th and 1st centuries BC. It includes two temples on either side of a square paved with tuff stone slabs. Another historical testimony is the Oratorio Cristiano Ipogeo, which contains 12th-century frescoes from the Byzantine school. It was initially created as a pagan nymphaeum in the 2nd century BC; from the 5th century AD, it was used as a Christian place of worship.

Other notable buildings complete the historical picture. The Church of San Pietro on Ardea’s ancient Rocca has origins dating back to the 9th century. The Church of Santa Marina was built in the 13th century. The Torre di San Lorenzo was completed in 1570 and is more than 30 metres high. These different periods make Ardea interesting for travellers who want to discover not only landscapes but also the historical layers of a place during their holiday.

Coast, Gardens and Nature Experiences

Tor San Lorenzo is a beach on the Ardea coast, which belongs to the Riviera di Roma. In the 2025 bathing-water classification for Lazio, Ardea’s waters were rated predominantly good, with one area rated excellent. Ardea also has Angez Dog Beach, a beach equipped for dogs on the seafront promenade of Tor San Lorenzo at kilometre 22.300. Travellers with a dog can include this specific coastal location in their daily planning without having to devote their entire stay to a single holiday theme.

The Giardini della Landriana provide a different focus. Each of their botanical “rooms” is characterised by a particular botanical feature. For group visits, lunch and guided tours in various languages are available. Another option for a more active day is the Golf Club Mare di Roma in Marina di Ardea. The 9-hole course lies on predominantly flat terrain and is laid out around three lakes fed by natural springs. Colonies of grey herons can be observed along the course of the Incastro River. In addition to culture and the coast, Ardea therefore also offers garden and nature experiences, each with its own character.

Regional Specialties and Choosing Your Accommodation

Ardea also has its own culinary points of reference. The Pantano tomato is one of the local specialties. Boccacce, sweet fried pizzas, are also among Ardea’s specialties. Ardea is also located in the area where Castelli Romani DOC wine is produced. When searching for a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can therefore first consider which travel focus suits you: Would you primarily like to include the coast and Tor San Lorenzo, discover cultural sites and museums, observe gardens and nature, or explore regional products?

For further destinations in the surrounding area, you can also view Rignano Flaminio, La Massimina-casal Lumbroso, Ottavia, Pomezia, Poli, Maccarese, Frattocchie and Subiaco.
