Anguillara Sabazia combines natural surroundings, a medieval urban structure and historical discoveries. The town is located in the Regional Natural Park of the Bracciano-Martignano lake area; its historic centre has preserved its original medieval layout. If you are considering a holiday apartment in Anguillara Sabazia, you can organise your travel plans around the lake, nature, history and regional festivals.

Active days by the lake and on the Ciclovia dei Laghi

For active days, the CAI 270 trail, the Ciclovia dei Laghi, begins at the Porta del Parco in Anguillara Sabazia and is approximately 8,000 metres long. The Ciclovia dei Laghi can be explored by mountain bike, on horseback or on foot.

The waters of Lake Bracciano are also suitable for sailing, rowing, surfing and diving. This provides a range of options from routes on land to activities on the water.

Holiday apartment in Anguillara Sabazia between the historic centre and archaeology

The town’s history includes the Palazzo Baronale Orsini and the Neolithic village of La Marmotta. The Palazzo Baronale Orsini was built in 1502 on the existing structures of the Palazzo degli Anguillara, at the request of Carlo, the son of Gentil Virginio Senior, Lord of Bracciano. La Marmotta in Lake Bracciano near Anguillara Sabazia dates from the period between 5750 and 5260 BC.

The Centro Espositivo del Neolitico di Anguillara Sabazia houses a 9.5-metre-long dugout canoe, recovered on 31 July 2005 near the settlement of La Marmotta at a depth of 12 metres. The Museo Neolitico opened in October 2006 in the premises of the former agricultural consortium and displays finds and explanatory panels about the Neolithic village of Anguillara Sabazia.

Church art and medieval traces

Another focal point is the Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta. It dates from the 9th century and is an example of Romanesque architecture; later alterations gave it a combination of different architectural styles. Frescoes and works of art, including a painting of the Assumption of Mary on the high altar, are part of the interior, as is the organ built by Domenico Alari in 1792. The present-day church consists of three naves; the two side naves contain three chapels.

The landscape combines nature and archaeology at Acqua Claudia. The spring and the ruins of Acqua Claudia now form the Acqua Claudia archaeological and natural history park. In the settlement of Marmotta, at the source of the Arrone, a visible monument marks one of the water-intake points of an aqueduct restored from 1608 onwards by Paolo V. Borghese. In the Mura di Santo Stefano, three distinct levels of the building are still recognisable despite the collapse of the roof and floor slabs; they are connected by a stairwell that has almost completely collapsed.

Regional festivals and specialities

The Sagra del Pesce is held in mid-June and has celebrated fishing as a traditional activity of the people of Anguillara on the shores of Lake Bracciano for more than 60 years. The focus is on fried lattarini served in the typical paper cone as street food, as well as the highly prized whitefish. “Broccoletti in piazza” is a food event in Anguillara Sabazia held at the end of March and organised there for 20 years.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Anguillara Sabazia, you can therefore focus above all on your preferred combination of nature park, water sports, medieval historic centre, archaeology and local festivals.
