Between Coastal Dunes, Wetlands and Urban History

Latina combines different travel experiences: within the municipality lies a section of the coastal dunes of the Circeo National Park between Capo Portiere and Rio Martino. At the same time, the city’s museums, buildings and collections tell the story of the development of the Pontine area. Those wishing to plan a trip combining nature observation, history and culture will find several clearly distinct focal points here for their own itinerary.

The wetland system of Fogliano, Monaci, Caprolace and Pantani dell’Inferno is particularly characteristic. It includes numerous habitats of community interest, including coastal lagoons as well as freshwater and brackish-water wetlands. Lago di Fogliano is a brackish-water lake in the Circeo National Park and is considered the largest brackish-water lake in the Pontine province. These landscapes give a stay a natural-history dimension that can be combined well with the city’s cultural themes.

Borgo di Fogliano and the World of Wetlands

Historical and nature-related themes stand side by side in Borgo di Fogliano. The building complex was constructed at the end of the 18th century. It houses an ornithological museum as well as an environmental education centre or laboratory dedicated to wetlands. The botanical garden is also part of this setting: the Caetani family equipped it with numerous plant species from different parts of the world.

There is one special rule to bear in mind when planning: a tour of Borgo di Fogliano can only be visited after making an advance reservation with the park administration. If you wish to combine nature experiences and cultural attractions, you should therefore include this visit in your daily itinerary well in advance. The information about birds, wetlands and plants provides a distinct focus alongside the museums on the region’s history.

Museums and the History of the Agro Pontino

Piana delle Orme is a themed and museum complex dedicated to the 20th century. It covers 50 years of Italian history. Two pavilions there also document the land-reclamation measures carried out in the 1930s in the Pontine Marshes and the founding of the new towns. The Museo della Terra Pontina displays around one thousand exhibits and presents the history of the Pontine area in the 20th century – from the period before land reclamation through the agricultural transformation of the Agro Pontino to its settlement.

The former Opera Balilla building provides an additional introduction to Latina’s architectural history. It houses the Museo Civico Duilio Cambellotti; the building was designed in 1932 by architect Oriolo Frezzotti. The Torre Civica is 32 metres high and offers panoramic views over the city. Palazzo M is an emblematic example of Latina’s Rationalist architecture and takes the form of the initial letter M. Families wishing to bring together different interests can therefore discover museums, architecture and the city from various perspectives.

Regional Specialities and Choosing Accommodation

The region’s range of products can also complement your travel plans. Emerald-green flesh and a sweet-and-sour taste are considered characteristic of Kiwi IGP di Latina. The Sagra del Kiwi is mentioned in connection with the month of December. When searching for a holiday apartment in Latina, you can therefore consider whether nature, urban history, architecture or regional products should be the focus of your stay. This allows the accommodation to be adapted to your preferred holiday rhythm, for example to a combination of focused museum days and excursions into the wetlands.
