Prosecco-Contovello: Karst Trails, History and Wine Tradition
Accommodation in Prosecco-Contovello
Prosecco-Contovello combines the landscape of the Trieste Karst with historical traces, terraced areas and an old wine tradition. This creates a special mix for planning your trip: you can explore trails with views of the Gulf of Trieste, learn about the region's history and discover Prosekar where its vineyards lie on the terraces near Contovello and Prosecco.
Trails through terraces, vineyards and the Karst landscape
One defining way to access the landscape is Nature Trail No. 9. It passes vineyards, rural stairways, old wells and the agriculturally used terraced areas of the Pastini. The trail offers views of the Gulf of Trieste and leads as far as Miramare railway station. It also descends from the foot of the Karst slope towards Castello di Miramare. Those who would like to combine different landscapes during an excursion will find vineyards, walls, stairways and wide views along one shared trail experience.
The so-called fishermen's trails connect Moncolano and Contovello with the coast. Their route between dry-stone walls and the terraced Pastini makes it clear how closely trails, agriculture and landscape design are connected in this area. Another option is the Strada Napoleonica, a trail in the Trieste Karst with beautiful views of the Gulf of Trieste. It can also be cycled and is suitable for families with children.
The landscape experience also includes the Laghetto di Contovello. The pond is located near the Sentiero Natura and a viewpoint overlooking the landscape below. It is about 40 metres wide, 30 metres long and no more than 2 metres deep. It is fed by a small spring and rainwater. In the past, it was a valuable water reserve on a plateau without surface rivers. These different facets make Prosecco-Contovello interesting for families who would like to alternate active trails with quieter nature observation.
Castle ruins, military history and views of Trieste
History is also present in the townscape and at the excursion destinations. Castello di Moncolano is recorded as a military castle dating from the 14th to the 16th century. Only a few ruins of Castello di Prosecco, also known as Castello di Moncholano, remain near the village of Contovello. The castle was built at the beginning of the 14th century to protect important transport routes and agricultural production areas. The historical identification of Castello di Prosecco with the ancient Pucinum is associated with the name Prosecco.
Another historic place to experience is the Parco del Campo di Addestramento Militare di Prosecco in Bosco Fornace. The themed trail is dedicated to the Austro-Hungarian 97th I. R. regiments and their role in the First World War. The Parco della Trincea del Litorale begins just a few steps from the car park of the Santuario di Monte Grisa. Monte Gurca, also called Monte di Contovello or Kontovelski hrib, is the highest point in this park and is suitable as a viewpoint. The Santuario Mariano di Monte Grisa overlooks Trieste and the Gulf of Trieste.
Prosekar and a suitable starting point for the trip
Prosekar is an old wine tradition of the area. The vineyards extend across the terraces near Contovello and Prosecco. Klin organises wine tastings and wine experiences in vineyards with sea views, also together with associations, institutions and other local agricultural businesses. A reservation at least two days in advance is required for a tasting at Klin. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can therefore consider whether the trails and viewpoints, the historical side or the wine tradition should be the focus of your trip.
Prosecco-Contovello is particularly well suited to a trip during which each day can be planned differently: a trail through the Pastini, a historical themed trail, a viewpoint or an exploration of the local wine tradition.
