Chions
Accommodation in Chions
Chions combines traces of historic landscapes with villas, churches, cycle paths and a park of meadows, wetlands and waterways. Those planning a trip to Chions can choose between cultural discoveries, longer cycling routes and peaceful paths along the water. When looking for a suitable holiday apartment, the key consideration is therefore which experiences should shape your stay.
Discover villas, towers and churches
Historic villas and residences are a defining feature of the surrounding area. The cycling circuit passes through Chions and includes Villa Sbrojavacca in Villotta and Villa Perotti in Chions. Villa Sbrojavacca is described as an ensemble surrounded by a garden, with a rectangular two-storey main building, a barchessa and an ancillary building. It is thought to have been built in the second half of the 17th century. Villa Perotti is a rectangular villa with three above-ground floors and a strongly projecting cornice; it was built approximately in the last quarter of the 19th century.
The preserved square brick tower of the Torre di Sbrojavacca also provides a point of historical orientation. It is 20 metres high, its sides are each 8 metres long, and at the base the wall is 1.65 metres thick. The Sbrojavacca castle in the Torrate district, on the other hand, was destroyed in 1820. These different traces show that a walk or bike ride through Chions can reveal not only surviving buildings, but also former structures and changes in the cultural landscape.
The churches add further highlights. The Chiesetta di San Giuliano was built in 1332, demolished in 1630 and rebuilt in the following years; reconstruction was completed in 1664. Its crenellated bell tower was built in 1934 based on a design by Vittorio Pascatti from San Vito. In Basedo, a district of Chions, stands the Chiesa di San Bartolomeo, built around 1350. The Chiesa dei Santi Ermacora e Fortunato is the only church in western Friuli dedicated to the founders of the Church of Aquileia. Historically, it was the destination of annual pilgrimages held in connection with an old fair on 12 July.
Cycling routes of varying lengths
For active days, the cycling circuit to historic villas and residences provides clear distance details: the outward journey covers 23.6 kilometres and the return journey 20.3 kilometres. The route partly follows the Ciclovia della Bassa Pianura Pordenonese, FVG 9. Another cycling tour leads from Sesto al Reghena via Cordovado and Chions to Taiedo. This allows travel planning to focus either more strongly on Chions's buildings or on a longer connection through several towns.
Waterways, nature and a market in May
The Parco delle Fonti di Torrate has 8 kilometres of walking and cycling paths through meadows, wetlands and waterways. A large car park is accessible from the S. Vito al Tagliamento–Villotta di Chions road; information boards accompany the paths in the park. Between Chions and Basedo there is also the artificial body of water Le Roste, with a sport-fishing centre where angling is possible.
Every May, Chions in fiore takes place, a market for flowers, plants and animals along the streets in the centre of Chions. Cultural events, performers, musicians and street artists accompany the market, along with tastings of blossoms and medicinal herbs. Those visiting Chions at this time can therefore combine their stay with an explicitly seasonal local event.
Which base suits your travel plans
For culture lovers, villas, towers and churches take centre stage, while cycling travellers can choose between the circuit with an outward journey of 23.6 kilometres and a return journey of 20.3 kilometres, and the route via Cordovado. Those who prefer paths through open landscapes will find a distinct focus in the Parco delle Fonti di Torrate. When choosing your holiday apartment, it is worth deciding in advance how you would like to structure your days, without combining the different experiences into a single route. For further discoveries, you can also include Villalta in your travel plans.
The right-angled arrangement of streets and fields is also part of Chions's character: it preserves clear traces of the Roman centuriation of the Agro of Julia Concordia. In this way, the town combines tangible buildings with a cultural landscape shaped over centuries and provides a varied basis for looking for a holiday apartment centred on history, activity and nature.
