Vito D'asio combines impressive landscapes in Val d'Arzino with historic paths, churches and special excursion destinations. Turquoise pools, wooded trails and a spectacular road through the rock give the area a variety of facets. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Vito D'asio can therefore plan their trip according to their own interests: with water activities in summer, hikes, bike rides or cultural and historical discoveries.

Water and Trails in Val d'Arzino

Among the most distinctive natural attractions are the turquoise pools of the Torrente Arzino in the central valley. They are located in the municipality of Vito d'Asio between San Francesco, Pielungo and Pert. In summer, they are destinations for bathing, swimming and canyoning. This creates a special complement to the wooded trails and cultural sights in the surrounding area.

For a clearly defined hike, the ancient medieval San Martino Trail from Vito d'Asio to Clauzetto is a good choice. The tourist route is classified as difficulty level T, is 4.4 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 170 metres. The duration given for the route is 1 hour and 40 minutes. Another footpath, approximately 3 kilometres long, follows the ancient medieval San Martino Trail to the Church of San Michele in Vito d'Asio. It runs through the forest and offers views of the Tagliamento Valley. In the past, this path connected the Pieve with Val d'Arzino.

Shorter excursion destinations can also be included in your plans. Fruinz, the oldest hamlet in Val d'Arzino, can be reached on foot from the main road via a path through the forest and then along a paved road; the route involves an elevation gain of around 100 metres. The Madonna della Neve on Mont di Anduins is a destination for walks through the forests. In the area of Anduins there is also the Falesia del Masarach, with several climbing sectors. The first sector is located directly by the car park.

Culture, Churches and Unusual Stories

In Pielungo stands the Castello del Conte Giacomo Ceconi, a stately building from the late 19th century. Its façade is characterised by statues, towers and turrets crowned with battlements; the building is set amid greenery. The Pieve di San Martino, by contrast, is located in a forest between Vito d'Asio and Clauzetto. Behind the apse of the present-day church are the remains of earlier buildings, which have been secured and made accessible.

Another cultural highlight is the Chiesa di Sant'Antonio in Pielungo. The choir contains frescoes by Francesco Barazzutti from Gemona, dating from 1905. After suffering severe earthquake damage, they were restored by the heritage conservation authorities. The furnishings also include three early-20th-century marble altars in the Gothic style. The Fontane di Pielungo consist of three fountains. The Pert fountain is considered the only witness to the disappearance of the entire hamlet on 7 May 1976.

In Vito d'Asio itself, the Campanile of the Chiesa di Sant'Antonio da Padova stands out because of its design: the square stone tower has a bell chamber with stone twin windows and round arches on all four sides. The Church of San Michele contains a wooden sculpture of San Gottardo from 1520 by Giovanni Martini.

Plan Excursions According to Your Mood

For a trip with varied interests, you can deliberately plan a range of different excursions. The pools of the Torrente Arzino are ideal for summer days by the water, while the San Martino Trail and the paths to Fruinz or the Madonna della Neve focus on activity and woodland landscapes. Those who prefer to travel by bike will find the Giro della Pieve d'Asio, a cycling and mountain-biking route of approximately 14 kilometres. It leads through Pradis di Sopra and Mont di Vit to Vito d'Asio, the ancient Pieve and Clauzetto. The route is considered not particularly demanding and offers remarkable viewpoints.

For a drive focused on scenery, the Strada Regina Margherita is an interesting option. It comprises eleven kilometres carved into the rock, with numerous viaducts and tunnels along the Torrente Arzino. The road was built in 1891 and established the connection between Pielungo and Anduins in Val d'Arzino. When looking for accommodation, you can therefore first decide whether water, hiking trails, culture or such a road and cycling tour should be the focus of your trip. This allows you to choose your holiday apartment according to the holiday experience you want.
