Regnano: Mud Volcanoes, Hiking Trails and Historic Church
Accommodation in Regnano
Regnano combines an unusual landscape with a multifaceted local history. The Salse di Regnano, trails of naturalistic interest and the Chiesa di S. Prospero Vescovo give your trip different focal points. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can therefore consider whether you mainly want to discover geological features, plan a longer route or explore the town’s historical heritage.
Mud Cones and Trails Through the Landscape
The Salse di Regnano are a geological feature of the area. Clay cones that resemble small volcanoes stand on a thick layer of mud. They form because gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons such as methane and crude oil rise from underground through groundwater-bearing layers to the surface. This unusual landscape makes Regnano an interesting destination for travellers who want to experience nature on their trip to Italy not only through viewpoints, but also through geological processes.
The Salse di Regnano can be reached via the long-distance hiking trail Sentiero dei vulcani di fango. The Sentiero naturalistico del Querciolese also passes through Regnano and is laid out as a circular trail. Its areas of naturalistic interest include the Salse di Regnano. The Sentiero Spallanzani reaches Regnano after descending into the Rio Faggiano and passes by the Salse. This makes it possible to distinguish between different hiking options: those who prefer a circular trail will find a specific route format in the Sentiero naturalistico del Querciolese; those who want to plan a longer stage should consider the first stage of the Sentiero dei Vulcani di fango, which is 29 km long from the Salse di Regnano to Valle del Rio Rocca.
The Via dei Vulcani di Fango also includes mud volcanoes in the hamlets of Regnano and Casola Querciola in the municipality of Viano. In the vicinity of Regnano, the Salse di Casola Querciola was prepared for visitors in 2015. A path bordered by posts runs lengthwise through the entire area; protective railings have been installed around the most important active vents. Another point of orientation is the Fontana del Pilastro on the road between Regnano and San Giovanni Querciola: there, a mineral-water spring and a sulphurous-water spring are collected.
Church History and Cultural Discoveries
The old Chiesa di S. Prospero Vescovo is part of Regnano’s history. It was consecrated in 1151 and dedicated to Saint Prospero. The present building was begun in 1856 and blessed in 1858. The church contains an organ from the last quarter of the 17th century, attributed to the Traeri organ-building workshop. For those interested in culture, this building therefore offers several historical points of reference, ranging from its medieval consecration to the furnishings of the present building.
The original Church of San Prospero in Cà Bertacchi di Regnano is also part of this history. It was abandoned at the beginning of the 17th century after repeated landslides had severely damaged it, and was rebuilt a short distance away. Those who want to combine nature experiences and culture when planning their trip can regard the hiking trails and church history as separate yet varied focal points for their days.
Regnano as a Starting Point for Planning Your Trip
Whether you choose a holiday apartment in Regnano or other accommodation for your stay, your preferred travel pace can be a useful point of orientation. The 29 km stage requires different planning from a circular trail, while the Salse, the Fontana del Pilastro and the Chiesa di S. Prospero each offer their own themes. This leaves room for active days as well as quieter explorations of cultural history, without having to combine all the experiences into a single route.
For further trip planning, you can also include Castellazzo, Cerreto Laghi, Campagnola Emilia, Borzano, Vecchia, Febbio, Quattro Castella and Rubiera in your research.
