Rubiera: Wetlands and Architectural History
Accommodation in Rubiera
Rubiera brings together two distinct highlights: the Cassa di espansione del Fiume Secchia regional nature reserve and an architectural history that spans medieval origins and later alterations. Those who appreciate both nature watching and historic architecture will find various ideas here for planning their trip.
Wetlands and Waterbirds
The Cassa di espansione del Fiume Secchia regional nature reserve protects restored wetlands in the former Valli di Rubiera. With its many waterbirds, the area is particularly well suited to birdwatching and nature photography. These highlights give a stay a different focus from exploring historic buildings: here, the emphasis is on wetland landscapes and wildlife watching rather than architecture.
One route starts at the l’Airone Environmental Education Centre (Casa Corradini), near the village of Fontana di Rubiera. The centre can be reached via Via del Rivone, a side road off Provincial Road No. 85 between Rubiera and Campogalliano. This provides a specific starting point for planning your route, while birdwatching and nature photography offer their own reasons to spend time exploring the landscape.
Towers, Churches, and Historic Buildings
In the townscape, the Torre dell’Orologio represents a clearly dated architectural history: the tower was built in 1556 by Domenico Valesino, an architect from Rubiera, and restored in 1760. The Chiesa dell’Annunziata can also be dated precisely. The Confraternity of the Annunciation built the church between 1710 and 1713. Their different dates of origin make these sites interesting if you want to do more than simply admire the buildings and also consider their individual histories.
The Corte Ospitale brings architecture together with former travel routes. The 16th-century complex was built along the Via Emilia, near the ford across the Secchia, so that travellers and pilgrims could rest and obtain provisions there. After careful restoration, the Corte Ospitale has been used as the cultural centre of the municipality of Rubiera since 2000. Its original purpose and present-day use mark two different chapters in the history of the same place.
Other architectural forms show how differently Rubiera’s history has been shaped. The Palazzo Sacrati dates back to the 14th century and was remodelled by the Sacrati family in the mid-15th century; an honor courtyard survives there. The Palazzo Rainusso was built in the 16th century as a monastery for the Conventuals of the Madonna. Il Forte, meanwhile, was a compact fortress with a square ground plan, a central courtyard, and four bastions. These examples range from an early palatial history and a monastic origin to a clearly structured fortress complex.
A semicircular medieval apse survives at the church of San Donnino and San Biagio. It is decorated with pilaster strips and interlaced arcaded friezes: the pilaster strips divide the wall, while the arches form a decorative band. A central street in the historic centre is lined with arcades; Rubiera is also situated on the historic Via Emilia. The Monumento a Don Andreoli stands beneath the portico outside the Palazzo Sacrati on Via Emilia Est. It commemorates the death of Don Giuseppe Andreoli, considered one of the first martyrs of the Italian Risorgimento.
Nature or Architectural History as a Focus
When looking for a holiday rental in Rubiera, you can start by considering what you want your stay to focus on. Birdwatching and nature photography offer a different emphasis from churches, palaces, and historic buildings. If both interest you, you can include both in your trip plans and choose the location of your accommodation to suit your own plans. This way, your search starts not with an accommodation that merely seems suitable, but with the question of what you want to discover in Rubiera.
