Luzzara combines a historically shaped townscape with the natural qualities of the Po floodplain. Anyone wishing to plan a trip that combines culture, landscapes and active excursions will find a variety of options here: in the historic centre, arcades, towers and a former Gonzaga palace take centre stage, while the Golena di Luzzara offers opportunities for nature observation and paths along the river. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Luzzara, you can therefore consider whether cultural discoveries or days in the Po landscape should be the focus of your trip.

Cultural History in the Town Centre

One prominent landmark is the Civic Tower. It was completed in 1780 with a dome bearing a cross featuring the Luccio symbol. Standing 55 metres high, the tower is considered the tallest tower in the province. Together with the old arcades, it gives the historic centre its distinctive appearance. The Civic Tower is therefore a concise point of reference for anyone wishing to discover Luzzara through its architectural history.

The Palazzo della Macina is also part of the town’s historical heritage. The former palace of the Gonzaga, the lords of Luzzara, was built around 1481. Above the main entrance is a Gonzaga coat of arms made of polychrome ceramics, created by Luca della Robbia. Details such as these make the palace particularly interesting for visitors who, on a tour of the town, want to discover not only large architectural structures but also artistic details. The parish church of San Giorgio represents more than twelve centuries of religious, artistic and historical history.

The town’s more recent cultural history also has a firm place here. The Centro Culturale Zavattini regularly organises cultural programmes on literature, cinema, theatre and photography. The programme also includes exhibitions, film screenings, performances, conferences, concerts and other cultural activities. The Teatro Sociale Danilo Donati is one of the 59 theatres in Emilia-Romagna recognised as a “National Monument”; this classification was mentioned in connection with the completion of renovation work in 2024.

Po Floodplain, Birdlife and Trails

The Golena di Luzzara is an approximately 10-kilometre-long section of the Po floodplain on the right bank, near the border with Lombardy. Its significant natural value is evident, among other things, in its birdlife: 26 bird species live in the Golena, most of them waterbirds. This offers a different rhythm for planning your day than a purely cultural stay. Observations in the river landscape, a walk or a bike ride can be regarded as an independent nature experience, without combining them with the programme in the town centre.

From Luzzara, a cycle path runs along the Po to Brescello and is approximately 25 kilometres long. If you enjoy cycling, this route provides a specific option for an active day during your holiday. The former Cava Luccio is a former gravel pit that has been renaturalised. Its entrance is located by the picnic area at Viale Po. This adds another landscape area to Luzzara’s floodplain and river perspective.

Excursions for Different Age Groups

For families with children and teenagers, the River Park adventure park offers a clearly defined activity option. It is located in the Golena of Luzzara, in a forest with centuries-old oak trees, and offers acrobatic courses between the trees at different heights and levels of difficulty for children, teenagers and adults. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between a culturally oriented day, nature observation by the Po and a more active experience in the forest. You can then select the right holiday apartment in Luzzara or a holiday home according to your preferred daily rhythm and personal holiday focus.
