Discover Correggio: Art, History and Local Traditions
Accommodation in Correggio
Correggio combines impressive architectural heritage, art and local traditions with a cultural programme that appeals to a range of interests. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home for a trip can tailor their stay here to their own priorities: with museums and historic buildings, a visit to the theatre, regional cuisine or a festival weekend.
Art and History in Correggio
A good starting point for getting your bearings is the Correggio Welcome Room. There you can obtain up-to-date information and brochures about sights and current events in Correggio. The facility is accessible without architectural barriers and is therefore also suitable for wheelchair users.
The city’s cultural profile is evident in several special places. The Teatro Comunale “Bonifazio Asioli” stands on the site where Niccolò Postumo da Correggio had his palace built at the end of the 15th century. The Teatro Asioli reopened on 3 November 2002 after a complete restoration. Its programme includes theatre seasons featuring drama, operetta, dance, concerts and theatre for children – an interesting option for travellers who would like to include a shared cultural evening in their plans.
The Museo “Il Correggio” brings together various historical perspectives. Its holdings include a set of Flemish tapestries from the 16th century consisting of nine large sections. There is also an archaeological collection with finds from the pre-Roman, Roman, medieval and Renaissance periods. Those with a particular interest in art can discover the Casa del Correggio at Correggio Art Home. The documentation and study centre dedicated to the artist’s life and work is located on the site of Antonio Allegri’s former home.
Historic Buildings and Special Details
The Palazzo dei Principi was completed in 1507 and subsequently served as the court residence of the da Correggio family. The Basilica dei Santi Quirino e Michele also tells of the city’s long architectural history: construction began in 1516 and it was consecrated in 1587. The basilica has three naves and twelve side chapels. The Chiesa di Santa Chiara offers an unusual eye-catcher with its illusionistic vault of painted coffers, which creates the impression of a dome. At the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Misericordia, a portico with four pillars and round arches made of exposed brick stands in front of the façade.
The Cimitero Ebraico is part of Correggio’s Jewish history. The site has been used for Jewish burials in Correggio since 1459. Almost 70 identifiable burials with gravestones dating from 1828 to 1958 have been preserved. The Rocchetta, also known as “Rocca Nuova”, was the most important fortification protecting the castle of Correggio.
Festivals, Flavour and Trip Planning
A local speciality is Scarpasot, a savoury pie from Correggio. In 2012, it received the municipal DeCo designation of origin and quality. The Fiera di San Quirino is a suitable opportunity to experience regional products and public events. It is scheduled for the first weekend in June and includes art, exhibitions, performances, food and drink, sport, as well as a market with typical food products and handicrafts.
When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore consider whether you mainly want to discover museums and architectural history, enjoy a varied theatre programme or plan a trip centred around local traditions. SETA buses connect Correggio with the railway stations. This information can be taken into account in your personal travel planning, as can the priorities you have for your stay.
